Johnson Launches Samsung Helmet of Hope Campaign
Beads of Courage and Hunter's Hope Foundation first selected charities

Beads of Courage (Tucson, Ariz.) and Hunter's Hope Foundation (Orchard Park, N.Y.) will be the first two children's charities to grace the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Samsung Helmet of Hope which Johnson will wear in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Auto Club Speedway in October

Each organization will also receive a grant of $10,000.

Becca Gladden of Insider Racing News nominated Beads of Courage, an organization that provides innovative, arts-in-medicine supportive care programs for children coping with cancer and other serious illness, their families, and the health care providers who care for them.

Beverly Bolam of Niagara Falls, N.Y. nominated the Hunter's Hope Foundation, which was founded by NFL Pro Hall of Famer Jim Kelly and his wife Jill and helps children with Krabbe and other Leukodystrophies.

Fans and media members across the country have the opportunity to nominate their children's charity of choice to be featured on Johnson's helmet for a select race. New this year, selected charities will also receive a grant of $10,000.

Johnson will draw one winner from a list of media submissions and one from a list of fan submissions each race weekend through the Atlanta event in September. The two charities selected Friday join the Feeding America® Kids Café program, which was nominated by Samsung to kick-off this year's campaign program. The Kids Café program works to address the growing epidemic facing children's hunger.

To nominate a charity, fans and media may visit www.HelmetofHope.org

  • He has an average start and finish of 7.8 and 9.5.

QUOTES
AFTER SOME BAD LUCK WITH PIT STRATEGY YOU MOVED FROM 22ND TO FIFTH IN THE FINAL 22 LAPS OF THE POCONO RACE IN JUNE. TALK ABOUT THAT AND GOING BACK TO THAT TRACK SO SOON.
"I think we were a top two or three car at some points in the race. We were at pace to be the fastest car on track. So I feel like we have learned a lot and have closed the gap to that 11 car (Denny Hamlin) at Pocono. I'm hopeful for another top two or three run. Of course I want to win, but those guys seem to have a little bit on everyone. I feel like we've closed the gap some. And hopefully we've learned a little more. Typically that's hard because the races are so close together it's hard to learn a lot in that period of time. But we hope to have closed up the gap more and can give those guys a run at Pocono."

SOME PEOPLE COMPARE RACING AT INDY TO POCONO. DO YOU THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT CAN HELP YOU OR IS POCONO KIND OF ITS OWN TRACK? "People have said that and I have always thought they're crazy. Maybe if you look at the setup on paper, at one time they were similar. But I just don't think there's anything to get you ready for either one of the tracks. And then Pocono - it's a triangle. It's bumpy and rough and different and awkward. So I think Pocono is its own animal. I think it's a stretch to compare the two."

SPRINT CUP SERIES CAREER NOTES
Career Wins
  • Johnson has 52 wins in his Sprint Cup Series career, his most recent coming at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on June 27, 2010.
  • The El Cajon, Calif.-native is currently 10th on NASCAR's all-time wins list, two victories behind Lee Petty.
  • He is second in total wins among active drivers, behind Jeff Gordon (82).
  • Johnson needed only 296 starts to hit the 50 mark. Only three drivers have reached 50 victories quicker - Gordon (232), Darrell Waltrip (278) and David Pearson (293).
  • Johnson has won at least three Cup races a season since he posted his first victory in 2002. He is the only driver in the modern era to win at least three races in each of his first eight full-time seasons.
  • Johnson has won Sprint Cup Series races at all but five (Michigan, Infineon, Chicago, Watkins Glen, Homestead) of the 22 tracks on which the series competes.
  • Johnson is the first driver to win three of the first five races in The Chase.
  • Johnson's 10 wins in 2007 was the highest number recorded in a single season since Jeff Gordon posted 13 victories in 1998.
  • The four-consecutive wins scored by the No. 48 team in the 2007 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup ties a modern-era NASCAR record.
Career Poles
  • Johnson has collected 23 poles in his Sprint Cup career.
  • The championship driver has earned at least one pole a year since his first full-time season in 2002.
  • He had a career-high six poles in 2008.
  • Johnson's most recent pole position was at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 20, 2009.
Career Starts
  • In 20 2010 starts, Johnson has collected five wins, eight top five and 11 top-10 finishes.
  • Johnson has finished in the top five in the Sprint Cup Series point standings each year since his first full season in 2002.
  • Johnson is the only driver to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup every year since the format was adopted in 2004.
  • In 311 Sprint Cup Series starts, Johnson has posted 125 top-five and 191 top-10 finishes.
  • He has a top-five finish at every track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit.
  • Johnson has led a total of 10,464 laps (of 89,497) in his Sprint Cup career, covering over 120,120.6 miles.
  • He has finished on the lead lap 239 times.
