Two More Charities Picked to Adorn Samsung Helmet of Hope
Cookies for Kids Cancer and Birthday Blessings newest additions

Cookies for Kids' Cancer (Califon, N.J.) and Birthday Blessings (Charlotte, N.C.) will be two of 13 charities which will adorn the Jimmie Johnson Foundation Samsung Helmet of Hope at Auto Club Speedway in October. Each organization will also receive a $10,000 grant.

ESPN's Marty Smith nominated Cookies for Kids' Cancer, a group committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer. Through the concept of local bake sales, Cookies for Kids' Cancer provides money, inspiration and support for families fighting pediatric cancer.

"Cookies for Kids' Cancer was founded by Gretchen Witt, a mother inspired by her young son Liam's cancer battle," offered Smith. "She did not accept his plight sitting down. Rather, she sought to change his world through sheer will, and as a result is changing the lives of children battling cancer every day."

Terri Springer of Matthews, N.C. nominated Birthday Blessings, an organization whose goal is to bring joy, recognition, and support to needy children and families during difficult and sad times in their lives. The three core programs raise spirits and boost confidence for homeless children ages tots to teens, and offer help and hope to homeless parents and their babies.

"Birthday Blessings is a fantastic nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless children," explained Springer. "Birthday Blessings is a new charity (whose demand) keeps growing due to the economy. Logan, my 10 year old, loves to go and help. He helps at some parties and watched as one boy blew out his candles. The boy didn't know how to do it because he had never had candles on his cake before. The organization not only provides smiles but gives the children a moment of normalcy in a time when it isn't normal."

Johnson will draw one winner from a list of media submissions and one from a list of fan submissions each race weekend through the Atlanta event in September. The two charities selected Friday join the Feeding America® Kids Café program, which was nominated by Samsung to kick-off this year's campaign program. The Kids Café program works to address the growing epidemic facing children's hunger.

QUOTES
YOU'RE HEADING BACK TO BRISTOL IN A FEW WEEKS, DO YOU HAVE A LITTLE MORE OPTIMISM THAN YOU'VE HAD IN YEARS PAST GIVEN WHAT HAPPENED IN THE SPRING? "We ran so well there in the spring, even last year, we had a great spring and fall race. That night race has always been one of my favorites. We look forward to being competitive and hopefully going back to victory lane there. It's a great race track; I've always loved watching races there. I'm glad to actually enjoy racing on that track now."

WHAT'S YOUR APPROACH ON POINTS NOW? "The bonus points, that's kind of the obvious one that all the drivers want and as a team, the momentum from a win would be very important and helpful. But from our standpoint, not just this year but others as well, we felt the consistency going into the Chase was really important. We've had some races in the last four or five weeks where we've been competitive and didn't finish well. We've had races where we weren't competitive and didn't finish well. I think we're looking more for a consistent run here leading into New Hampshire before we start the Chase. If we can get 10 points, obviously that's what we need and what we want. But I think the momentum and the confidence that comes with four or five strong races is really important."

SPRINT CUP SERIES CAREER NOTES
Career Wins

  • Johnson has 52 wins in his Sprint Cup Series career, his most recent coming at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on June 27, 2010.
  • The El Cajon, Calif.-native is currently 10th on NASCAR's all-time wins list, two victories behind Lee Petty.
  • He is second in total wins among active drivers, behind Jeff Gordon (82).
  • Johnson needed only 296 starts to hit the 50 mark. Only three drivers have reached 50 victories quicker – Gordon (232), Darrell Waltrip (278) and David Pearson (293).
  • Johnson has won at least three Cup races a season since he posted his first victory in 2002. He is the only driver in the modern era to win at least three races in each of his first eight full-time seasons.
  • Johnson has won Sprint Cup Series races at all but four (Michigan, Chicago, Watkins Glen, Homestead) of the 22 tracks on which the series competes.
  • Johnson was the first driver to win three of the first five races in The Chase.
  • Johnson's 10 wins in 2007 was the highest number recorded in a single season since Jeff Gordon posted 13 victories in 1998.
  • The four-consecutive wins scored by the No. 48 team in the 2007 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup ties a modern-era NASCAR record.
Career Poles
  • Johnson has collected 23 poles in his Sprint Cup career.
  • The championship driver has earned at least one pole a year since his first full-time season in 2002.
  • He had a career-high six poles in 2008.
  • Johnson's most recent pole position was at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 20, 2009.
Career Starts
  • In 23 2010 starts, Johnson has collected five wins, eight top five and 12 top-10 finishes.
  • Johnson has finished in the top five in the Sprint Cup Series point standings each year since his first full season in 2002.
  • Johnson is the only driver to qualify for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup every year since the format was adopted in 2004.
  • In 314 Sprint Cup Series starts, Johnson has posted 125 top-five and 192 top-10 finishes.
