Kasey Kahne and the No. 9 Budweiser Valvoline Ford Team Atlanta Advance

Tuesday August 31, 2010

Kasey Kahne

No. 9 Budweiser/Valvoline Ford Fusion

Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway

  • Kasey Kahne and the No. 9 Budweiser/Valvoline Ford team enter Sunday’s Emory Healthcare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) as the defending winners of the Labor Day weekend night race. One year ago Kahne visited Victory Lane at AMS after racing his way from fourth to the lead on the final restart with 11 laps to go. He held the point position for the last 10 laps, stretching his lead to a 1.766-second margin of victory when he took the checkered flag.
  • In 13 previous starts at AMS, Kahne has earned two wins (Sept. 2010 and March 2006), one pole award, six top five and eight top-10 finishes. His average starting position is 9.6 and his average finish is 16. Kahne has also led a total of 297 laps at the 1.54-mile track.
  • Kahne heads to Atlanta fresh off of a fifth-place finish in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series last race at Bristol Motor Speedway. It was his sixth top five and eighth top-10 finish of the season. Kahne has also scored two pole awards this year (Sonoma and Michigan).
  • Kahne is currently ranked 16th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver point standings and is 136 points behind the 12th-place cut-off point for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
  • While NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams enjoyed the final off weekend of the 2010 season last week, Kahne returned to his old stomping ground and ended up celebrating in Victory Lane. Kahne traveled west to his home state of Washington last week to compete in the Kasey Kahne Foundation’s Sage Fruit Showdown at Skagit Speedway. Kahne competed in the 360 sprint car event and raced his way to the lead just past the halfway point in the 20-lap feature and retained the top spot after a late-race restart. Kahne first competed at the local high-banked, three-tenths-mile dirt track when he was just 15 years old.
  • Kahne will run double duty this weekend at AMS as he is also scheduled to compete in the No. 38 NASCAR Nationwide Series entry on Saturday night.
  • Fans in Macon, Ga., will have the opportunity to meet Kahne on Thursday, Sept. 2, when he visits the Academy Sports & Outdoors store located at 1689 Eisenhower Parkway. Kahne is scheduled to be at the store at 5:30 p.m. to meet fans and sign autographs. A limited number of wristbands will be available in advance.

Kasey Kahne discusses racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway:

Talk about your win last year at Atlanta: “It felt awesome to win at Atlanta, especially at that point in the season where everything was coming together for the Chase. The guys on the Budweiser team stepped up and had great pit stops all night and the calls Kenny (Francis) made were perfect.

“I knew we could go fast for about 15 laps, faster than anybody, but after that I would get a little bit too loose to hang with (Kevin) Harvick and (Juan Pablo) Montoya. With 11 laps to go, you know, just getting to the front was what I was thinking I needed to do. Once we did it, everything was perfect from there out. It was just a great team effort.

“It was great to see the crowd that turned out at Atlanta for that race. Since I've been racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, I haven't seen a crowd like that, especially one that excited. There was a lot on the line with guys trying to race their way into the Chase, and a lot of those guys were running up front and battling hard for position. I think it was a good show for all the fans that came out to see it.”

What is it that you like about Atlanta? “Atlanta is one of my favorite race tracks. It’s a fast track and it’s wide enough so there are multiple grooves for racing. I like the fact that it lets the driver figure out where the car is handling best. It makes it a little more challenging, but it’s also a lot of fun.”

Talk about the multiple grooves at AMS. “Your car may be good on the bottom early in the race, but as the track changes the car may work better up top. It's important to move around to make sure you are running the quickest line. A line that didn't work early may be the right line later in the race. Just because another driver is having success with one line doesn't mean the setup you have in your car will automatically produce the same kind of results.”
