The AP is reporting that 2004 Craftsman Truck Champion, Bobby Hamilton, died today, Sunday, January 7th, of cancer.
Family friend Liz Allison, who is the widow of NASCAR star Davey Allison and co-hosted a radio show with Hamilton, reported that Hamilton was at home with his family when he died.
Hamilton was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in February, 2006, after a malignant growth was found when swelling from dental surgery did not go down.
He raced in the first three events of the Craftsman Truck season before turning over the driving duties to his son, Bobby Hamilton Jr, at Bristol in March.
The senior Hamilton returned to work at Bobby Hamilton Racing in August after doctors indicated that the CAT scans looked good, But microscopic cancer cells remained on the right side of his neck.
Hamilton’s best season in Nextel Cup racing was in 1996 when he finished ninth in the standings while recording his first win in the Nextel Cup series at Phoenix. In addition to the Phoenix win, Hamilton took the checkers at Talladega, He recorded wins at Talladega, Rockingham and Martinsville.
