Lernerville Speedway Visit Helps Chub Frank Shake Off Some Early-Season Misfortune

BEAR LAKE, PA -Chub Frank shook off a bout of early-season misfortune with a mid-week visit to his favorite racetrack.

The veteran star from Bear Lake, Pa., battled to a hard-earned third-place finish in Tuesday night’s 50-lap World of Outlaws Late Model Series ‘Showdown in Sarvertown’ at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., where he’s enjoyed plenty of success over the years.

After rallying to finish third in his heat race following a first-lap scramble that sent him back to eighth, Chub marched forward from the 10th starting spot to finish hot on Shane Clanton’s runner-up car in the A-Main. He wasn’t sure if he might have had something for winner Billy Moyer, but he never even got a chance to mount a serious bid for the $10,000 win because he couldn’t complete a late-race pass of Clanton.

“The track was actually pretty good for the first night (of racing there in 2008),” said Chub. “But when we get back here in June (for the ‘Firecracker 100’ on June 27-28) we’ll see a little different racetrack. I’m looking forward to that one.”

The third-place run did raise Chub’s spirits after a pair of disappointing outings a few days earlier, on April 11 at Virginia Motor Speedway and April 12 at The Rock/Allegany County Speedway in Cumberland, Md.

“The way our luck’s been going,” said Chub, “I definitely needed a good finish (at Lernerville).”

In Friday’s 50-lap WoO LMS ‘Rumble on the River IV’ at VMS, Chub felt that his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* was capable of finishing as high as second. But his hopes for such a strong placing were dashed when he slid sideways in turn four while running third on lap 14 and was clipped by Josh Richards.

Chub, who half-spun because his car stalled when he got on the brakes to avoid another machine that pushed out of what he described as the track’s wet bottom, salvaged an eighth-place finish after pitting to have his car’s damaged hood removed.

Twenty-four hours later, in the 50-lap Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) season opener at Allegany County Speedway, Chub appeared headed to a third-place finish when he slowed with a blown left-rear tire. He had to settle for a 12th-place finish.

Chub, who sits tied for fifth in the WoO LMS points standings with Darrell Lanigan (56 points out of first) after six events, heads south to compete in the tour’s Circle K Colossal 100 this weekend (April 18-19) at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. The third annual race pays $50,000 to win.
