Ryan Crane Gets His Trophy Guitar with ASA SAT in Nashville

Tuesday July 8, 2008

Preston Peltier Disqualified in Post-Race Tech

ATHENS, GA (July 7, 2008) – After the checkered flag flew on Saturday’s “RC Cola / MoonPie 100,” you could hear the Kenny Chesney concert off in the distance. After all, the Music City Motorplex is in the heart of the country music capital of Nashville, TN, and Chesney’s hit song “Young” has a line that best describes the night’s action, ‘…it sure goes fast, just like that.’

It’s a line that plays right into the story of the pair of drivers who held the famed Copley guitar trophy after the race. Series regular Preston Peltier took the checkered flag after a dominating performance in the 100-lap event. He was the “sure goes fast” portion of the night. But, “just like that,” Ryan Crane ended up with the victory in his first ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour race after a disqualification in post-race tech.

“This is definitely not the way we wanted to get it,” said Crane after the race. “He had a little bit better handling racecar than us. You know rules are rules and you have go by them. We had to read the rule book before we came here to race.”

Peltier led 97 laps on his way to the checkered flag before being disqualified in post-race tech. It was deemed that Peltier’s car had a cold air box that did not meet specifications of the ASA SAT rule book.

“Apparently, in the rule book it says you have to run a Five Star (Racecar Bodies) air box, and what we have is not a Five Star air box,” said a frustrated Peltier. “It’s cut and dry; it says it in the rule book. We overlooked it.”

ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour Operations Manager Micky Cain ensures equal racing within the Tour. Just last week they made rules changes to balance out the different engine combinations to level the playing field in the Late Model tour.

“The ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour is 100 percent in compliance with the ABC body concept,” said Cain. “We do everything we can to comply with all the rules and specifications of the ABC Bodies program. So, that makes the Five Star cold air box the only allowed air box for ASA SAT.”

Crane started sixth and picked his way into the top five and got to second late in the race. He had a few opportunities to catch Peltier on some late-race restarts; however, he could only watch him drive away in the corners. Before the tech, he shared his thoughts.

“We just didn’t have enough for the 5-car (Peltier),” said Crane. “Some crate motors are better than others, but all in all it was a good run. This ASA Southeast Tour is a pretty neat racing series. This was my first start, and it was a blast racing with these guys.”

Two hours later, he was signing a different tune in victory lane as he got to take home the custom made guitar that is synonymous with the Nashville track.

“I can’t play a guitar a lick; I can’t sing either. Hey, I got a guitar, and we came into this weekend looking for two wins and we got them,” said Crane, who won another Late Model race earlier in the week. “I want this week to keep going; I would race Sunday night if we could.”

For someone who can’t sing or play the guitar, you often wonder what he would play if he picked up his new six string?

“I would probably stay here in Nashville and play some Conway Twitty.”

Crane ended up with point Leader Jay Middleton right behind him at the finish. Middleton gained a bunch of ground in the standings as other challengers had problems. Russell Fleeman was third, John Bolen fourth and David Elliott fifth.

The ASA Southeast Asphalt tour will be back in action at Iowa Speedway on Sunday, July 20th. The event is an ASA SAT non-points combination race with the ASA Midwest Tour.
