Johnson Heads to Victory Lane for the Fifth Time in a Row on the Motorplex's 50th Anniversary

Sunday July 20, 2008

July 19, 2008, Nashville, Tenn. – On the 50th Anniversary of asphalt racing at the Music City Motorplex, the NASCAR Whelen Late Model drivers did their best to continue to the track’s history of grea t racing for the next fifty years with two action packed races. Both the Music City Drygdsi.com 125 and the NASCAR Camping World East Strutmasters.com 150 showcased the thrilling side by side short track racing that the 5/8th mile track is famous for. Many of the great drivers and families that contributed so much to make the Motorplex the best short track in America were also on hand to celebrate the occasion.

Michael House and Chevy White brought the NASCAR Late Models to the green flag of the Music City drygdsi.com 125. House jumped out to lead lap one, leaving the cars of Chevy White and Skip McCord to battle for second as House sped away from the field. Skip McCord was running third when he and Mark Day made contact coming off turn four, allowing both Day and points leader Andy Johnson to go by McCord.

After a caution on lap thirty four brought Day and Johnson back to the rear bumper of House, the top three ran nose to tail for several laps until Johnson was able to maneuver the No. 20 car around both to take the top spot. Once Johnson got out in front on lap fifty four, he quickly pulled away from the second place car of Mark Day and never looked back en=2 0route to his fifth consecutive Late Model victory. The most dramatic moment of the race for Johnson came when the lapped car of Mike Murray spun on the front stretch of lap 119 and came within inches of taking out the race leader. The intense heat also played a role in the race, forcing both Michael House and Michael House out of their cars late in the event.

A hard crash involving Skip McCord and Chevy White on lap 123 brought out a red flag while the track was cleared. Thanks to the quick work of the safety crew, both drivers were able to walk away from the crash unhurt. An exciting green, white, checkered finish followed, giving the second place car of Dillon Oliver one last chance to pass Johnson. But with a good restart, Johnson held on to take home the night’s prized trophy – a custom commemorative Copley Instruments guitar.
Dillon Oliver finished second, with D.W. Shacklett, Dwayne Hudson, who started fifteenth and Mike Pruitt rounding out the top five.

The Motorplex’s 50th Anniversary weekend of racing action will conclude Sunday, July 20 with the CRA Super Series All American 150. Gates open at 1:30 , and the race is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
