Preston Peltier Takes Region Title as ASA SAT Visits Southern National
ATHENS, GA (October 6, 2008) – It was a lot like Christmas morning for some drivers competing at the RC Cola / MoonPie American Speed Association Southeast Asphalt Tour’s visit to Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC. Everyone got a present. Jason Hogan won the race on Saturday, while Jay Middleton clinched the RC Cola / MoonPie Series Championship and Preston Peltier locked up “The Beach Tour” Regional Championship after finishing second to Hogan in the 100-lap event.
“We’ve had a good car every time we have run with this series. It’s good to win and do the TV interview (ASA SAT’s TV listings can be seen on its official website, www.asasoutheast.com); couldn’t ask for a better car,” said Hogan. “I knew coming up here we would have a good car, and just luckily it stayed under us tonight.”
Hogan started the race in the seventh position and quickly moved to the front. By lap 30 he was already up to second and hounding Jeff Choquette for the lead. Lapped traffic would play a critical roll as Choquette would be forced to run high around lapped cars going into the corner. Choquette got a piece of the wall and ended up coming down pit road.
“It’s crazy that lapped cars would race that hard in front of the leaders,” said Choquette. “I was trying to hold on to the lead and Hogan was coming. We got up in the marbles and got into the wall; it stinks, but we’ll be back.”
Jason Hogan took over the top spot, and after holding off a hard-charging Peltier, the Georgia native took home the win. After the race, Hogan talked about Choquette’s tangle.
“We went off in the corner, and the lapped cars had been racing side by side before that, and I said, ‘Man, this is not going to be good,” Hogan explained. “I guess he got in the wall and had to come in. I hate to see that for him. I’d rather pass him on the racetrack than in the pits.”
Hogan had won the prior RC Cola / MoonPie ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour event at Hickory Motor Speedway when Choquette was disqualified in post-race tech for an engine violation.
This week at the beautiful Southern National Raceway Park, local racer Clay Jones came home third, Taylor Satterfield was fourth, and Jay Middleton wrapped up the series’ championship with a fifth-place finish. For Middleton, it was his first major regional Late Model Touring series’ title. He had won Florida Pro Championship a few years back.
“It feels real good, especially being the inaugural champion of the series and everything,” said an ecstatic Middleton. “In the record books, it will always be me, being the first champion, which is always a cool thing. I’ll be in a trivia question one day or something.”
As Middelton won the big battle, the Regional Title went to Preston Peltier, who had his best finish in several weeks on the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour.
“We set out originally… to win the overall championship,” said Peltier. “There were so many setbacks; financially it just took a toll and that’s just where we ended up. And it’s a good thing. I’ve never won a championship in a stockcar, so this is a good start.”
