Chub Frank’s Weekend At Challenger Raceway Starts Promisingly, Ends Quietly

Tuesday October 14, 2008

BEAR LAKE, PA – A weekend that started promisingly ended quietly for Chub Frank at Challenger Raceway in Indiana, Pa.

The 46-year-old star from Bear Lake, Pa., kicked off last weekend’s three-day UFO-sanctioned ‘Ultimate’ meet at the one-third-mile oval with a solid fourth-place finish in Thursday night’s 41-lap ‘Mega Blitz 2008’ preliminary feature. But his hopes of pocketing the main event’s $22,000 top prize weren’t realized because he failed to qualify for Saturday night’s 91-lap headliner.

Chub’s fortunes took a nose-dive during the Friday-night heat-race program for the ‘Ultimate’ feature. After he vaulted from the last starting spot to third in a single lap, a suspension failure on his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1* sent him to the pit area.

Buried at the back of the pack for the start of the fourth B-Main on Saturday night, Chub made a valiant effort to grab one of the race’s two transfer spots. His charge ended with a third-place finish, leaving him one position shy of a berth in the feature.

“The car was good all weekend,” said Chub, who drove the machine he steered to a third-place finish its debut run on Oct. 7 in a World of Outlaws Late Model Series event=2 0at Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway. “We were going to be in good shape even though we drew a bad starting spot for the heat, but then we got behind when we dropped out of the heat – and when you have to start at the back of a B (Main) at a show with the kind of car count (Challenger) had, you’re going to be in trouble.”

Chub was a serious contender for victory in the ‘Mega Blitz 2008’ program that kicked off the ‘Ultimate’ on Thursday night. He won a heat race and ran as high as second in the 41-lap feature before settling for fourth place.

“We had a little harder tire, but our biggest problem was the restarts,” said Chub. “We got up to second a couple times, but then there would be a caution and we’d get stuck in the inside lane. The outside lane was better on the restarts.”

Chub arrived at Challenger after a two-day trip to North Carolina with the WoO LMS. He began the swing with the uplifting third-place finish at Fayetteville in the completi on of a show held-over by rain on Aug. 15, but the Wednesday night (Oct. 8) event scheduled for The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., was postponed by rain to Oct. 29.

Chub, who sits fifth in the WoO LMS points standings, will head to K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio, this weekend to defend his 2007 victory in the prestigious Dirt Track World Championship event. Time trials and heat races are scheduled for Friday night (Oct. 17) and last-chance events and the $50,000-to-win, 100-lap A-Main will be contested on Saturday night (Oct. 18).

“Hopefully we’ll go there and have everything go our way like last year,” said Chub, who won the DTWC for the first time in his career last season. “We could use a good run to get out of this funk we’ve been in.”
