Team Mopar® Driver Allen Johnson Will Go All-In for Win at Vegas

Friday October 24, 2008

Center Line, Mich. —Team Mopar® NHRA POWERade Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson needs a perfect performance—a No.1 qualifying berth and event win—to keep his hopes alive in the NHRA Countdown to 1 playoffs. Johnson is feeling confident, with a little help from Mopar HEMI® power, that he can hit that much-needed jackpot next weekend at the ACDelco® Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. The race is scheduled for Oct. 30–Nov. 2 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Johnson, driver of the Mopar/J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T, has proven he can claim the top spot during qualifying, capturing three No. 1 Qualifier Awards on the season thus far. The veteran Team Mopar driver has made two finals appearances during eliminations but has yet to capture his first win of the year and sixth of his career. A victory in Las Vegas would go a long way toward boosting Johnson up from his current seventh spot in the NHRA Countdown to 1 Pro Stock point standings.

“I think I’ve said it before, we have to be on keel,” said Johnson, a Greeneville, Tenn. native. “We need to qualify No. 1 and we have to win races. Maybe Jeggy [current points leader Jeg Coughlin] will stub his toe and go out first round, and if that happens we’ve got a shot. We’re only three rounds out of second place. But we’ve got to be perfect.”

Johnson’s J&J Racing team, led by crew chief Mark Ingersoll and Johnson’s father/engine builder, Roy Johnson, has performed superbly during the 2008 season. [Allen] Johnson has qualified in the top half of the field in 20 of 22 2008 NHRA POWERade events to date, helping him advance into the Countdown to 1 playoffs for the second-straight year.

“We’ve got a really good set up for Vegas,” said [Allen] Johnson. “In the spring race there this year we ran really well. It seems like our Mopar HEMI engines like the high-altitude tracks, so I feel like we got a really good set up. We can qualify No. 1 and gain a few extra points on the field. Then I need to go out and do my job.”

Johnson to Participate in Speedway Children’s Charities’ poker tournament at The Cannery Hotel & Casino

For the second straight year, Allen Johnson will take part in the Speedway Children’s Charities’ poker tournament. The tournament will be held prior to the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at The Cannery Hotel & Casino on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

“I’m very happy to continue my support for Speedway Children’s Charities,” said Johnson. “I took part in the poker tournament last year at the Cannery and had a blast. I support this event and the work of Speedway Children’s Charities, big time.”

Drivers scheduled to join Johnson at the fifth annual “Cards for Kids” Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament include: Mopar-powered Funny Car driver Jack Beckman, Antron Brown, Bob Vandergriff Jr., Jeff Arend, Brandon Bernstein, Cory McClenathan, Greg Anderson, J.R. Todd, Morgan Lucas, Dave Connolly and Justin Humphreys.

Speedway Children’s Charities works to make a difference in a child’s life by collaborating with non-profit organizations nationwide. Individually, SCC’s local chapters identify the needs of children in their communities and award grants to organizations that address them.

70 Years of Mopar
When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Originally used in the 1920s, Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960’s–the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth “package cars” equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of “Special Parts” for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division called Mopar Performance Parts to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Today, Chrysler LLC’s Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler Engineering standards.
