ASA SAT Provides Parity at the Top for Engine Builders

Several Different Engine Combinations make it to Victory Lane in 2008

ATHENS, GA (November 18, 2008) – When the RC Cola / MoonPie American Speed Association Southeast Asphalt Tour was formed, series Owner John Kee and Operations Manager Micky Cain billed the series as a place where all types of Late Models could come and race.

In the Southeast, several Late Model tours were already in place, but many drivers found themselves limited in where they could race because of the type of engine they had beneath the hood of their car. After a successful first season, however, the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour has emerged as a leading series with a level playing field for all types of cars and different engine manufacturers.

“It’s been a lot of work, from the dyno room to working on the phone with engine manufacturers and reading the engine sheets,” said Cain. “It has not been a walk in the park, but in order to make this successful, we had to put in the hours to make this fair for everyone.”

During the course of 2008, several different engines pulled into victory lane. Crate motors from GM and Ford were winners along with Florida Spec motors; and even a steel-head 500 two-barrel carburetor-type combination found its way to the winner’s circle in the series’ inaugural season.

The simple fact of the Southeast Asphalt Tour is that any engine combination can win on any night.

“We had crate motors sit on poles and win races,” added Cain. “We had Florida spec motors sit on the poles and win races. The list goes on and on. Every combination, from built motors to crate and spec motors, all of them were competitive in 2008.”

Unlike other series that ban teams and drivers from using certain engines in their series, ASA SAT took the hard task of working with teams to come up with the right combination for each to create an even playing field across the board.

“Anyone who shows up to race with ASA SAT is going to be treated fairly,” said tour regular John Bolen. “We ran three different types of engines in ASA SAT. We had our 9:1, our two-barrel, and our crate motor, and at no time with any of the motors did we feel that we were at a disadvantage. Micky Cain has made a great series with the engine rules.”

The ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour will be back in full swing in 2009, both on the track and in your living room with televised events for a second year in a row. Series’ officials plan to release the schedule for next season very soon.

Do you want the chance to win a free Frontstretch T-Shirt, and are you really good at talking about NASCAR? Well, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Our staff will be giving away a free T-Shirt to the reader who makes the best post in our Frontstretch Forum between now and the end of the season. So, what makes a good post? It’s pretty hard to impress us, but here are some things we are looking for:

Does your post spark passionate reactions from other readers? Are you commenting on meaningful NASCAR-related events? Do your posts have substance? In other words, “Dale Jr. is the best driver ever” or “Danica Patrick is hot” will not cut it.

So go to the Frontstretch Forums, post early, post often, and post well! We’ll announce the winner following the final race of the season at Homestead.
