Josh Hamner Sports a High Profile Heading Into The Snowball Derby

Blizzard Champion Enters Both The Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100

CHELSEA, AL (November 21, 2008) – It’s going to be hard for Josh Hamner to fly under the radar into the 41st Annual Snowball Derby week at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.

For starters, the young Alabama driver is the 2008 Blizzard Super Late Model Series champion at the track. Secondly, he is going to be all over the track over the course of the five-day event. Hamner will drive the #38 Hamner Motorsports entry in the Snowball Derby and the #4 Wholesale Controls International entry of Bobby Reuse in Saturday night’s Allen Turner Snowflake 100.

“We’re going to be good in both classes,” said Hamner. “I’ve never ran the Snowflake 100 before. I’ve run the Snowball Derby three times, but this will be a first for me. I can’t thank Bobby Reuse, his family and his team enough for giving me this opportunity. Hopefully, we’ll go down there and give both teams a good showing.

“I’ve got both cars sitting in the shop right now, side by side. They are going to get the same treatment and we’re looking forward to going down and having a good run.”

Although the Snowflake 100 is a bit of a tune-up for Sunday’s Snowball Derby, that doesn’t mean that it will give Hamner an extra on-track advantage. The set-ups for both races are very different, but a little bit of momentum from a great run on Saturday night could help Hamner’s Derby chances.

“If I hadn’t been racing there all year long, it might be [an advantage],” said Hamner. “But I’ve gotten to make so many laps around there this year that I have a good feel for the place. If we have a good race, it might help set the tone for Sunday. But the two races are different beats because one is in the day and one is at night.”

One perk of being the Blizzard Series champion is that Hamner is guaranteed to make it into the starting field of the Snowball Derby this year. Since qualifying for the race is tough, and top-shelf drivers like NASCAR star Kyle Busch, USAR Pro Cup Series champion Benny Gordon and short track legend Butch Miller have all gone home early from the Derby, that is a big weight off Hamner’s shoulders.

“Having that guaranteed starting spot takes some pressure off,” said Hamner. “One of the hardest things other than winning the Derby is just making the show. I’ve seen a lot of good drivers and a lot of good cars go home because of the luck of the draw or something like that. There are so many different variables that get thrown at you and that makes a difference because qualifying is so tight. One year, the pole speed was a 17.0 and the cutoff was a 17.20. That’s pretty tight between 40 cars.

“But just because we’re in the show, doesn’t mean that we are going to relax any and not try to lay down a good qualifying lap. More than anything, we can gear up more for qualifying because we are safe. But just because we have that provisional doesn’t mean that we want to use it.”

Hamner can’t relax at all when it comes to qualifying for the Snowflake 100 though. After all, over 60 cars are expected to enter that race and the competition for a starting spot will be fierce.

“I’ve seen cars fast enough in Snowflake qualifying to earn a really good starting spot for the Snowball Derby.”

The weeklong festivities of the Snowball Derby kick off on December 4th with practice for both Pro and Super Late Models. The Allen Turner Snowflake 100 will be on December 6th, with the Snowball Derby on December 7th.
