Augie Grill Looking To Become Repeat Snowball Derby Winner in December
Sunday November 30, 2008
PENSACOLA, FL (November 28, 2008) – Just over one year ago, Dolomite, Alabama, native Augie Grill won the biggest race in his career when he drove into victory lane in the 40th Annual Snowball Derby Super Late Model event at Five Flags Speedway (FL). Yes, Grill had been in victory lane there before twice, but as a crew member for winning drivers Wayne Anderson and Butch Lindley. This time, though, instead of walking to victory lane, he drove his car there as the winner of the event.
A year later, Grill is ready to defend his title in the 41st Annual Snowball Derby and add his name one more time to the record books.
Grill can remember how special that day was in December 2007, but even though he enjoyed the post-race accolades, it took several days after the victory for it to sink in that he was a Snowball Derby winner.
“It was probably by the end of the next week,” said Grill. “I had been on about three or four radio shows. I guess that brought me down to earth. It was cool. I have never done anything like that. To think of the names that have won it before, and now I am on that list, so that is pretty cool.”
Ever since it sunk in, Grill and his crew have been working on his car, getting it ready for a return trip to the Pensacola, Florida, track in December of 2008. During the process, he has had some highs and lows, but the knowledge gained will be applied on the return trip.
“We have been trying different things with most of them backfiring this year,” explained Grill. “We are just trying to get the car a little better, but we know what not to do. Hopefully we will go down there with the right frame of mind and do it again.
“Everyone is really a lot better race-wise than they were two or three years ago. You have to up your game to even have a chance at winning the Snowball. There are 38 cars there that think they have a chance at winning it, so it gets tougher every year.”
So, what are Grill’s chances of repeating the feat this year?
“I think pretty good,” said Grill. “We had a real good car down there twice this year, and that is when we were sticking to our guns and doing what we knew. I feel if we do that, we will have a good chance to win the Snowball, just like we did last year.”
The 41st Annual Snowball Derby Weekend will kick off Wednesday, December 3rd, with the Fifth Annual Cat Country/WEAR-TV3 Green Flag Party, where fans can meet their favorite drivers and enjoy live music, food, beverages and more entertainment for the whole family. On-track action will kick off on Thursday, December 4th, with practice for the Allen Turner Snowflake 100 and the Snowball Derby, as well as practice, qualifying and features for the Sportsmen and Bombers.
102.7 WXBM Pole Night is Friday, December 5th, with time trials for the Snowball Derby being the headline event on a schedule that also includes practice for the Snowball and Snowflake and events for the Open-Wheeled Modifieds and Super Stocks.
The Allen Turner Snowflake 100 headlines the activities on Saturday, December 6th, as the Pro Late Models will take to Five Flags for their time trials and the 100-green-flag-lap feature. The last-chance qualifying race for the Snowball Derby Saturday night will set the field for Sunday’s main event for the Super Late Models.
