2008 SSP Xtreme Stock Car Track Championship Recap and More

Sunday January 4, 2009

Donnie Broderick Beats His Father Ray for the SSP 2008 Xtreme Stock Car Track Championship; Kendra Knaub Claims Third Straight Women on Wheels Title

Newberrytown, PA (December 30, 2008) – Lancaster’s Donnie Broderick  only finished outside the top ten once en route to claiming his first SSP Xtreme Stock Car Track Championship over his father.  Broderick also claimed the Fab Four Championship for the Xtreme Stock Cars, consisting of a five race special “series-within-a-season.”  Only three races were held as two were cancelled due to rain.  These races were extra distance races with extra purse monies on the line.  During the season, he visited victory lane a total of five times and had fourteen top-fives.

Ray Broderick, also from Lancaster finished in second behind his son with five victories as well in 2008.  Ray sits fourth, tied with Dover’s Gene Knaub, on SSP’s All-Time Feature Winner’s List for the Xtreme Stock Cars with nine wins.  Michael Goodwin of Wellsville, leads with twenty career wins.

Donnie Broderick and his father Ray will collect their honors and awards respectively at the 2008 SSP Awards Banquet and Night of Honor scheduled for Saturday night, January 24, 2009 at the historic Valencia Ballroom in downtown York.  The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with dinner served at 7:00 p.m.  Awards presentation will follow the dinner.  There will once again be a “Kid’s Banquet” at the same time.  After dinner, all children will be permitted to sit with their families during the awards presentations.

There will be many awards given out during the evening.  The following drivers in their respective divisions will be recognized with awards during the post dinner ceremony: Late Models (Top 20), Street Stocks (Top 20), Xtreme Stocks (Top 20), Four Cylinders (Top 10), Mini Vans (Top 10), Wingless Midgets (Top 5), Legends Cars Pro (Top 5), Legends Cars Masters (Top 5), Legends Cars Semi Pro (Top 5), Classic Cars (Top 5), Vintage Cars Modified (Top 5), Vintage Cars Sportsman (Top 3), Women on Wheels (Top 5).  Tickets are on sale now.  Order forms will also be available online at www.sspracing.net or by calling 717-292-1696.

Adam Smith concluded the season third in the track championship point series finishing 107 points behind Donnie Broderick.  The Lewisberry driver claimed his first career SSP win, seven top-five finishes and fifteen top-ten finishes during the regular season.

The Xtreme Stock Car’s equivalent to professional baseball’s Cal Ripken Jr., Sam Rial of Windsor finished fourth.  Rial has the distinction of competing in every Xtreme Stock Car track championship race over the past five years at SSP.  There have been 96 XSC races since 2004 and Rial has made every start even after flipping his car in two different events during the 2005 season.   Rial was also very consistent with one victory, eleven top-five finishes and fourteen top-ten finishes in 18 races.  Rial will be looking to claim his elusive first track championship after finishing second once (2007), fourth three times (2004, 2006 and 2008) and once in ninth place (2005).

Finishing fifth in 2008 was York’s Tim Hahn with two top-fives and thirteen top-tens in 18 starts.  Hahn will also be presented the Speedway’s Sportsmanship Award from the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown in January.  Late Model driver, Sam Leonard, Jr. is the other 2008 SSP sportsmanship award recipient from A.R.C.H.

Larry Landis finished sixth, 237 points behind the leader.  The Dover, PA driver did not find his way into victory lane, but was always in the mix with fourteen top-ten finishes.  Carlisle’s Chris Heller did find victory lane twice to finish the points championship in seventh place.    Newville resident, Jason Failor finished eighth with his first career SSP feature wins and ten top-ten during the season.  Matt Adams of York Haven finished a very respectable ninth place after three top-fives and six top-ten finishes at SSP.  Alex Updegraff of Etters collected his first career Xtreme Stock Car feature event as well to round out the top ten in points.  Along with the victory, Updegraff had eight top-fives and nine top-tens.

The Women of Wheels (W.O.W.) Stock Car Championship was claimed by Kendra Knaub of Dover.  She won all five feature events en route to her third straight W.O.W. track champion title.  Dover’s Beth Buhrmann finished in second place, just thirty points back.  Nancy Horan Frye of York finished the season in third, with Renae Luckenbaugh of Elizabethtown and Karen Hawthorne of Mt. Joy in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Beginning on Saturday, April 18, 2009, there will be a separate XSC Rookie Rumble race as the Xtreme Stock Car class will continue to include qualifying heats, a consolation race and a feature event each night.  XSC Rookie Rumble drivers will need to be pre-registered and pre-approved before they will be permitted to compete in the Rookie Rumble class.   The Rookie Rumble will be a feature-only race for entry level competitors.

The 2009 season opener of Stock Car Saturday Night will be on Saturday, April 11, with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars and ARDC Midgets.  The will also be a special visit from the Easter Bunny for the kids in attendance.

The season opener for the “Outback Track” featuring Quarter Midgets and Go Karts is scheduled for Friday, April 17.

Pre-season test and tunes will be held on Saturday, March 28; Saturday April 4; and Wednesday, April 8.
