Tuesday May 19, 2009
By Matt Prieur and Chris Fobbe – Dixie Motor Speedway
Birch Run, Michigan (Friday, May 15, 2009): It was Opening Night 2009
Part II / Speed Dating Night at the historic Dixie Motor Speedway on
Friday, May 15th as threatening skies and cold temperatures hung
around all evening long with Mother Nature eventually visiting the
Birch Run, Michigan speed plant.
The 2009 debut of the Pro Late Models were the first feature of the
night as A strong field of 18 were on hand for their 30-lap feature.
Modifieds graduate, Joe Hodgeson Jr. and Adam Rowe sat on the front
row and as the green flag flew, three-time Track Champion, Chad
Bennett, would pull an amazing move, ducking beneath both Hodgeson
Jr., and Rowe to take the lead on lap one.
Bennett would begin to pull away quickly, but two-time defending Track
Champion, Ed Doutre Jr. found himself right on Bennett’s back bumper
just prior to the 1/2 way point of the race. The two drivers would be
glued to each other until lap 20, when Doutre Jr., slipped by to take
the lead. His lead would be brief however, as Bennett regrouped and
drove right back by and retook the lead on lap 23.
Bennett wouldn’t look back as the Caro, Michigan driver in his B-C
Auto Repair Chevrolet went on to take the Pro Late Models first
feature of the season. Doutre Jr., would come home second with
two-time Owosso Speedway Pro Late Model Champion, Tony Hoose in third
as Welch earned the Schaefer and Bierlin Dodge Hard Charger of the
race award with his 17th to fourht place run in his severely damaged
ride. 2008 Rookie of the Year, 16-year-old Blake Childers came home in
fifth.
Mark Klein, Curt Genow, Adam Rowe, Jim Hardy, and Rick Osborn Jr.
rounding out the Top 10. Doutre Jr., set fast time with a lap measured
at 16.143 while 17-year-old Mark Wilcox and Bennett took the heat race
wins.
The only other feature conducted on the fast 4/10s (0.400) mile
progressively banked paved oval was the Sportsman 25-lap affair. Jimmy
Novak and Gary Shank Jr. lead the field down to the green flag and it
would be the 16-year-old Novak leading the opening lap. Chris Stearns
quickly worked his way through the field from his fourth starting spot
and took over the top spot by lap two.
Chet Allen and defending track champion, Kevin Harder would be all
over Stearns, but Stearns would hold them off lap after lap. Coming
down to take the checkered flag, Allen would make one more last ditch
effort to get by the Davison, Michigan driver .
As hard as Allen tried, it just wasn’t too be as Stearns in his
Stearns M-15 Garage Chevrolet would fight off the advances of Allen to
go on and win his first Sportsmen feature of the season.
Harder would come home second and earn the Schafer and Bierlein
Hard-Charger of the Race Award while opening night feature winner, Don
Riley was third.Novak got the fourth spot as Allen rounding out the
top five. Riley was the fast qualifier for the second night in a row
with a 17.276 while Gary Shank Jr., brought home the heat race win.
For the Modifieds it was a bit of a throw back to yesteryear as they
were next and lined up to the do battle on the adjoining 1/3 (0.333)
mile semi-banked paved oval for the first time since the end of the
2002 season for Round I of the Modifieds Short Track Series, a four
race series for the Modifieds on Dixie’s short track.
17-year-old C.J. Harsen and 2003 Modifieds Track Champion, Matt
Szecsodi sat on the front row for the 30-lap feature and it would be
Szecsodi jumping out to take the lead on lap one. Travis Eddy, the son
of seven-time ASA National Tour Champion, four-time Dixie Super Late
Models Track Champion, and Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer, Mike
Eddy, would make an amazing run to the front and found himself on on
Szecsodi’s back bumper just five laps into the feature.
Eddy would eventually sneak under Szecsodi in turn three and would
emerge from turn four the leader on lap eight. Eddy wouldn’t look
back, as the Midland, Michigan stand out, who was behind the wheel of
Dan Wieland’s #88 Wieland Contracting Chevrolet checked out on the
rest of the field en route to the Feature Win in Round I of the
Modifieds Short Track Series and earning the Schaefer and Beirlein
Dodge of Frankmenmuth Hard Charger of the Race Award in the process!
Birch Run’s own, Robbie Johnson, in a rare appearance in a Modified,
finished second while three-time Modifieds Track Champion, Todd
Matheson nipped Fast Qualifier, Buck Harsen at the start / finish line
for third. Szecsodi completed the Top Five. Harsen set fast time on
the 1/3 mile with a lap of 15.532 while Eddy took home the heat race
win.
As the 20-lap Bombers feature was all set to roll out onto the track,
the skies opened up and Mother Nature let her wrath be known, forcing
Dixie officials to postpone the Street Stock, Bombers, and Figure 8
features.
Before the rains came, Defending Street Stocks Track Champion, Ed
Newman Jr., set fast time with a 16.370 while Dewey Romans and
Maverick Morrow won heat races. The Street Stocks 25-lap feature will
be made up this coming Friday May 22, 2009.
In the Bombers, opening night feature winner, Jeff Roethlisberger Jr.,
out qualified the 22-car field with a 17.973 while Mike Wines, Chad
Congdon and Gerry Persails, Jr. took the heat races.
The Figure 8s do not Qualify or run Heat Races, they draw for their
starting postions in their 15-lap Feature during the Drivers Meeting.
The Bombers Feature as well as the Figure 8 feature will be made up on
Friday, May 29, 2009.
