Month Of May Was Pretty Darn Good For New York’s Mike Knight
Friday June 5, 2009
RIPLEY, NY – Mike Knight certainly was satisfied with the way he got his season rolling during the month of May.
The 22-year-old rising dirt Late Model star from Ripley, N.Y., picked up some definite momentum during his busy month of action, which saw him enter 12 events at eight tracks in five states. In those dozen appearances he recorded one win, six top-five and eight top-10 finishes – not too shabby for a driver who was looking to find his rhythm one month ago.
“I feel like our car was pretty strong for the whole month,” said Knight, who campaigns family-owned Rocket machines. “We’re not far off from where we want to be with the cars. We could just use some breaks and luck to come our way to put us over the top.”
Knight started the month with a victory on May 2 at Stateline Speedway in Busti, N.Y., giving him two dirt Late Model wins to date in 2009. He closed the month with another triumph on May 31 at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa. – behind the wheel of Jim Clinger’s No. 222 open-wheel E-Mod, which he is running quite often this season.
In between, Knight flashed his burgeoning talent with some impressive performances against top-notch competition. He was especially successful in O’Reilly All-Star Late Model Series competition, scoring a runner-up finish on May 30 at Butler Motor Speedway in Quincy, Mich., after finishing eighth the previous night at Hartford (Mich.) Motor Speedway (following a pit stop to change a flat tire when he was running fifth) and placing third on May 24 at Central Pennsylvania Speedway in Clearfield, Pa. (from the 20th starting spot).
Knight also recorded strong finishes away from the All-Star tour, on May 15 at Arcade International Speedway in Delevan, N.Y. (third place) and May 22 at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio (second place).
“We’re looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Knight, who sits eighth in the current All-Star Late Model Series points standings despite missing a couple events. “I think we have our program running well and should be able to contend for some wins.”
The driver known as ‘Hollywood’ has a light schedule ahead of him this weekend. He plans to run Clinger’s E-Mod on Friday night (June 5) at Raceway 7 and pull double-duty with his dirt Late Model and the E-Mod on Sunday night (June 7) at Eriez Speedway.
Knight’s dirt Late Model operation carries sponsorship from Arrowhead Wine Cellars, Mobilia Fruit Farm, Ottawaya’s Auto Body, Knight Farms, Corry Chrysler, Jay’s Auto Wrecking, Jim’s Parts Plus, RJB Construction, Chessa’ Pizza, NYPenn Surveying, TeCulver Contracting, Genesis Shocks, Crager Race Engines, Slavic Custom Racing Shirts and American Racing Tires.
