Canton, Michigan (Wednesday, June 10, 2009): Justin Schroeder knows
what it takes to go up against the best of the best in the world of
Outlaw Bodied Super Late Models racing in the state of Michigan as
well as Northern Ohio. He continues to prove that he belongs amongst
the top echelon of drivers in this ultra competitive division.
The 22-year-old Schroeder made his first appearance of the season at
his home track of the ARCA sanctioned Flat Rock Speedway, located
north of Toledo, Ohio in Flat Rock, Michigan on May 30th as a 50-lap
Feature was on tap and Schroeder made the most of his first race of
the season on the fast 1/4 mile high-banked paved oval.
After several laps of racing side by side with Two-Time and Defending
Track Champion, Eric Lee. Schroeder knew he had to make a move soon
and he did with a daring three-wide pass between Eric Lee and a lapped
car with just five laps to go to take over the lead and score his
first Feature Win of the 2009 racing season in just his second start
of the year!
Now Schroeder is solely focused on the next event on the 2009 J.M.S.
Racing schedule. Round I of the Dixie Cup Triple Crown Series at the
4/10s mile progressively banked d-shaped paved oval of Dixie Motor
Speedway, located South of Saginaw in Birch Run, Michigan on Friday,
June 12th for the running of the 1st annual East VS West Shootout 100.
“During the warm up laps before the (Flat Rock) race, I really didn’t
think we were going to be that good,” Schroeder explained. “We fought
a tight car off the corner all day and it seemed to still be there.
After that I put some rear brake in it and hoped for the best and
things worked out pretty good.”
He then continued; “When the race started, the outside lane moved and
I just rode on the inside. The car was not good up high at all but
once we got under way the car really started to come to me. I was
splitting people three-wide because you don’t have time to mess around
in a 50-Lap race at Flat Rock” he laughed.
The caution plagued 50-lap Feature hindered Schroeder’s efforts to get
to the front sooner. “Every time a yellow came out, I had just passed
a car for position and then I had to do it all over again.” The
Canton, Michigan driver remarked.
“It even happened when I passed the second place car when two lapped
cars got into each other causing the leader to slam on his brake
allowing me to pass him as well. Then for some reason the track threw
the yellow and I had to go back to third.”
Even with the cautions, laps click off at a rapid rate at the historic
1/4 mile and Schroeder knew it was time to go. On a restart on Lap 39,
Schroeder, who was
third, began his assault on the leaders.
“I worked on the second place car (Steve Cronenwett Jr.) and once I
got around him, I knew I had to make a move quickly on the leader,
(Eric Lee)” He explained. “I got inside of him and just overdrove the
car causing the right rear to get hot and that made me real loose, so
I took it easy for a lap and let it cool off and made one last run.”
That’s when Schroeder pulled up along-side Lee and the two drivers
waged a war side by side for the top spot. “We got side by side coming
to a lapped car. I knew he was going to try and pinch me behind him,
but I didn’t move. I had the preferred line, made the pass and took
off for the win.” He ended.
This was Schroeder’s second career Feature Win at Flat Rock as the
Great Lakes State driver made his first career victory an impressive
one as he scored the win in the Stan Yee Memorial 150 back on July 26,
2008. This year’s version is set for June 27th and Schroeder will be
on hand to defend his title.
His first 2009 start came at Flat Rock’s sister track, the 1/2 mile
high-banked paved oval of Toledo Speedway in Toledo, Ohio on May 22nd
for Round One of the ARCA Gold Cup Series where he dropped out while
running fourth with just a three laps to go in the Big Red Crème Soda
100.
Schroeder began his racing career in Go-Karts in 1996 driving for his
family-owned J.M.S. Racing Team. During his Go-Kart career, he
compiled championships, numerous wins and, various accomplishments
including multiple “Driver of the Year” honors at many of Michigan’s
various Karting tracks.
In 2003 at just 16 years old, Schroeder made the jump to full sized
cars and began competing in the very competitive Street Stocks
division at Flat Rock where he won the Rookie of the Year title while
finishing an impressive 10th place in the season long points chase.
Schroeder made the leap from Street Stocks to Super Late Models in
2006 and won the Rookie of the Year title at Flat Rock that season.
After two seasons full of solid top five and top ten finishes, the
youngster is now taking that next step up the realm as a top-notch
competitor in the Midwest and is traveling to a variety of facilities
in 2009!
