Owosso's own, Pat Standley wins first career Pure Stocks feature at Owosso Speedway

Friday July 3, 2009

By Matt Prieur and Chris Fobbe – Owosso Speedway

Ovid, Michigan (Saturday, June 27, 2009): The legendary BIG FOOT
Monster Truck invaded the Owosso Speedway in Ovid, Michigan on
Saturday, June 27th as the popular monster truck was on display and
even displayed its’ awesome horsepower for the solid crowd on hand by
taking a few laps around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked paved oval
as the “pace car” for the evening!

The first feature of the evening was for the Fast Track Promotions
Sports Stocks, who were treated with the widely popular in car / on
track driver introductions. As for the 20-lap feature, Wayne Beckner
Jr., the current points leader in the Pony Stocks division at near-by
Spartan Speedway, and feature winner there the previous night, started
on the pole along-side rookie points leader, 17-year-old Tim Rodgers.

Beckner Jr., would lead the first lap before Russ Potter took over the
lead on lap two and checked out on the rest of the field. Potter would
cross the start / finish line first to seemingly win the feature.
Unfortunately, Potter did not report to Tech after the feature and was
Disqualified, giving the win to Toledo, Ohio driver, Jim Hammond, who
arrived late at the track, didn’t qualify, and started shotgun on the
field.

Hammond in his Auto River Automotive Dodge also earned the
Hard-Charger of the Race award for his 15th to first place run!
15-year-old rookie, Harley Smith who earlier in the evening recorded
her second fast qualifier award of the season and won her first ever
heat race, backed those up with a career high second place finish.

New Points Leader, Shaun Conner finished third as J.T. Leach, Bill
McBride, 15-year-old Matt Vainner, Scott Rodgers, Beckner Jr., T.
Rodgers, and Jeff Aseltine finished off the Top 10. Smith’s fast time
was a 19.894 over a season high 19-car field as her and Beckner Jr.,
won heat races.

The traveling stars of the Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Michigan
Legends Series were next for there 30-lap Feature as Series Points
Leader, Tony Monge and veteran Ben Rouster brought the 16-car field
down to chief starter, Jeremy Slayden’s green flag to start there
feature.

Monge grabbed the lead from Rouster from the onset and tried in vain
to pull away from the pack. 2008 Series Champion, Chance Rice clawed
his way up to second from his sixth starting spot and glued himself to
Monge’s back bumper the entire race.

Despite some cautions for spins and one accident, Monge was up to the
challenge the entire race as the Howell, Michigan driver fended off
the advances of Rice and drove his Monge Motorsports Ford drove to
victory lane for his first career Owosso Speedway feature win!

Rice settled for second while Brandon Mahoney, Cody Mahoney, Roy
Nicholson, Gary Joppich, Sean McPherson, Andrea Hans, Levi Rouster,
and Ben Rouster completed the top 10.

For the first time in 16 career appearances at the Big “O”, the
Michigan Legends Series qualified as Chance Rice and Matt Todd both
established the track record as they ran identical 17.698 laps! Tyler
Rycenga, Cody Mahoney, and Keera Allen won heats.

The Drive Train Specialists Pro Late Models Feature was dramatic to
say the least as Mark Pettit and Russ Cords led the field to the green
flag to begin there 30-lap feature. Cords beat Pettit to the first
corner to grab the early lead as defending track champion; Dave Bigos
quickly grabbed second and set his sights on Cords.

On lap five, Bigos overtook Cords for the lead and walked away from
the rest of the field en route to what would’ve been his first feature
of the season. At post-race tech however, Bigos was Disqualified
giving the feature win to Fenton, Michigan veteran, Mark Welch, who
would end up with his third feature victory of the season in his
Scooter’s Bar and Grill Chevrolet.

Leo Smith finished a season high second over Jason Felver, current
points leader Ed Young Jr., and Cords, who wrapped up the top five.
Four-time track champion, Tom Hoose, who slid off the track on the
opening lap but maintained his momentum, thus no caution, came from
the back of the field to finish sixth as 15-year-old Dillon Bigos,
rookie points leader Jim Hardy, Kyle Murphy, and Chris Lupien
completed the top 10.

Earlier in the afternoon, Welch was the fast qualifier for the third
time this season as he toured the 3/8s mile oval at a 16.292 over the
15-car field. Tom Grossman and Hoose scored heat race victories.

To complete the night, the RacingPartSales.com Pure Stocks rolled out
next and were the recipients of the Fast Track Promotions Bonuses
which featured an extra $1,000 added to the overall purse and five
extra laps added to the feature, making there main event a 25-lap
affair!

2008 Rookie of the Year, Hurley Adkins and Joyce Derminer would lead
the 18-car field to the green flag and it would be Adkins pacing the
field for the first seven laps of the extended distance race. Pat
Standley, who started eighth, methodically sliced his way through the
field and drove around Adkins on lap eight to grab the lead.

From that point on, it was all Standley the rest of the way as the Owosso, Michigan veteran, one of the original competitors from the first season the Pure Stocks division was created at the Big “O” in 2005, finally put in all together and steered his Elite Fleet Collision Chevrolet into victory lane after winning his first career Feature on a very special night for the exciting Pure Stocks division!

Jim Gokee finished second while Eric Spencer, defending track champion
Kevin Adkins, current points leader Jimmy Stratton, Hurley Adkins,
Derminer, Mike Ashford, new rookie points leader Steve Good, and Jeff
Cummings rounded out the top 10. Stratton was the fast qualifier for
the seventh time in seven tries with a 19.385 while Hurley and Kevin
Adkins brought home heat race triumphs.

The next race on the 2009 schedule at the Big “O” will see the return
of the Fire Breathing, Winged Warriors of the Auto Value / Bumper to
Bumper Super Sprint Series, who will make there return to the Owosso
Speedway after a one-year absence on Saturday, July 4th.

The Super Sprints will make their long-awaited return on the Fourth of
July Weekend as part of Michigan National Guard Fourth of July Open
Wheel Extravaganza. Also that night will be a HUGE FIREWORKS display
as well as racing action for the Weekly Local Racing Series divisions
of Wieland Contracting Modifieds, Affordable Tire and Service Center
Pro Stocks, and RacingPartSales.com Pure Stocks.

The Auto Value Super Sprints, based in Three Rivers, Michigan, has
made nine appearances at the historic Ovid, Michigan speed plant and
their only appearance of the 2009 season will mark their first race at
the Big “O” since the 2007 racing season.

Many legendary drivers have graced the high banks over the years as
Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame driver, Jeff Bloom is the only
repeat winner in the nine races at the Big “O”. The Bangor, Michigan
veteran won both the inaugural race in 2001 and most recent Feature in
2007.

Jason Blonde, Cameron Dodson, Dave Baumgartner, Tom Fedewa, Brian Lay,
Jimmy McCune, and Kevin Feeney all have also taken a win while Dodson
holds not only the Super Sprints track record, but the all-time Owosso
track record with a blistering fast lap of 12.565 around the 3/8s
mile. For More information on the Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Super
