Josh DeLong and Tim Rose score two feature wins at Dixie Motor Speedway on Eve of Destruction Night

Tuesday July 7, 2009

By Matt Prieur and Chris Fobbe – Dixie Motor Speedway

Birch Run, Michigan (Sunday, July 5, 2009): The Fourth of July Holiday
Weekend ended at the Dixie Motor Speedway in Sunday, July 5th as it
was Eve of Destruction II. A standing room only and very vocal crowd
was on hand to witness the carnage and destruction that helped finish
off the nations’ 233rd birthday celebration.

There was actual racing at the Birch Run, Michigan speed plant as the
Speedway Graphix Street Stocks were on hand for a special invitational
on the adjoining 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked paved oval as Brian
Cogswell and Barry Vance started on the front row. Cogswell led the
first lap before Vance, originally from Birch Run and now calling Port
Charlotte, Florida home, drove by to take the lead a lap later.

Whittemore Speedway regular, John Zawacki, who started on the outside
of the third row, used the outside groove to his advantage and on lap
five. He brought defending track champion, current points leader, and
fast qualifier, Ed Newman Jr., with him and the battle was on for the
lead.

Newman Jr., tried several times to get by the northern invader but
each time Zawacki was up to the challenge and the Bentley, Michigan
veteran in his Zawacki Racing Engines Chevrolet made the most of his
first ever appearance at Dixie and took the feature win and the $500
prize that came with the victory!

Newman Jr., settled for second while Dewey Romans Jr., Brian Vandecar,
Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer Jay Woolworth, Cogswell, Vance,
Josh Hahn, Aaron Spearling, and Colt Mabrey finished off the top 10.
Newman Jr’s fast time was a 16.552 while Cogswell and Zawacki won heat
races.

The traveling stars of the Vintage Racing Organization of America
(V.R.O.A.) Modifieds rolled out for there 30-lap feature on the fast
4/10s (0.400) mile progressively banked d-shaped paved oval as Max
Wirebaugh and Glenn Parker brought the field down to chief starter,
Carl Wanks’ green flag.

Wirebaugh led the first lap before Mike Becker drove by on lap two.
Three laps later, Steve Fuller made the pass for the lead and brought
V.R.O.A. Modifieds points leader, Samantha Jansen with him. Jansen,
who won the previous two events held for the series so far, was
looking to make it a three for three for the 2009 season and
immediately applied pressure to Fuller.

On lap nine, Jansen drove around Fuller to take over the top spot and
from there, it was all Jansen as the young lady from Cambridge,
Ontario / Canada pulled away from the rest of the field and the
22-year-old in her Walker Racing Engines Plymouth pulled into victory
lane with her third feature win in three series starts!

Bob Martin finished second while Fuller, G. Parker, Wirebaugh, Becker,
Don Deyman, Don Smith, Jim Lawson, and Rob Parker would complete the
top 10. Jansen also set fast time with a 17.978 as Becker and R.
Parker won heat races.

It was then time for the destruction to begin as the Spectator Drags,
although not as destructive, were first as 14 entries took part. Clio,
Michigan’s Jim Hogan scored the win in his Chevrolet S-10.

The first real destruction race of the night was the Chain-Gang Race
as teammates were hooked together with a chain with the lead vehicle
pulling his teammate around the 1/3 mile while the trailing teammate
had no power and could only steer. 27 participants took part and when
all was said and done, Clio, Michigan teammates, Josh DeLong and Tim
Rose scored the popular win.

The Flagpole race was up next as drivers had to navigate around
strategically placed tractor tires placed around the oval. 14 drivers
took part and as the checkered flag flew, five drivers in a row forgot
to steer around the tractor tire to finish the race! 16-year-old Dale
Spencer, who had been running sixth, saw what was happening in front
of him and the Ovid, Michigan teenager quickly drove around the final
tractor tire and scored the victory to a standing ovation!

The Crash Cars were next as they reversed themselves from the
Chain-Gang race. This time the teammates pushed there partners from
behind around the oval. For the second time of the night, Josh DeLong
and Tim Rose would work together and bring home there second feature
of the night over a 24-tandem field.

Once the oval track racing was done for the night, it was time to get
crazy on the inner figure 8 track as the School Busses rolled out. As
was the case back in June during the first Eve of Destruction of the
season, Ovid, Michigan veteran, Phil Ehlert once again found himself
in victory lane over the six-bus field as he took the lead on lap five
and fended off teammate, Tom Bower as the two battled side by side
over the last seven laps of the 12-lap feature!

Finally to complete the night, the Figure 8 trailer race was next as
24 participants tried to survive the most destructive race of the
night. Participants had to survive the 12-lap feature with there
trailer intact while other drivers tried to knock off there trailers.
By any means necessary. When all was said and done, Montrose, Michigan
driver, Jim Rifki scored the popular win as only five drivers finished
out of 24.

The next Eve of Destruction is set for Sunday, August 9th as the
fourth and final Eve of Destruction of the year will also close out
the 2009 racing season at Dixie Motor Speedway on Friday, September
11th.

action while the Checkered Flag Promotions Figure 8s will close out
the evening.

In the first race of the Dixie Cup Triple Crown series, the 1st annual
East VS West Shootout 100 was held back on June 12th as Cedar Springs,
Michigan rising star, 22-year-old, Dakota Carlson took home his first
career Dixie Super Late Models Feature and led a Westside sweep of the
top two in the process!

Fellow Westsider, Mike Root finished second while Johnny Belott was
the highest finishing driver representing the East in third. Michigan
Motorsports Hall of Fame driver, Steve Sauve was fourth and Mike
Luberda Jr., completed the Top Five.

Ken O’Connor, a semi-regular in the tracks’ Weekly Local Racing Series
Pro Late Models and Modifieds divisions, collected a sixth place
finish as Steve Cronenwett Jr., Gene Quackenbush, Ron Allen, and
