John Bolen Back In Victory Lane With Record-Setting Romp at Montgomery

Tuesday October 13, 2009

Bolen Sets New Track Record and Wins $5,000 “Show Me the Money” Feature

JASPER, AL (October 12, 2009) – Race victories have come frequently in John Bolen’s racing career from when the 23-year-old began his driving career in Karts and Bandoleros at the age of eight all the way through his current Late Model days, where he was a two-time winner in 2008.

But victories had been at a premium for Bolen in 2009.  The Jasper, Alabama, native had amassed double-digit, top-10 and top-five finishes this season, but had yet to crack into victory lane.

The winless-streak came to an end on Saturday, September 10th, and it did so in record-breaking fashion.  Bolen set a new track record in qualifying for the “Show Me the Money III” event at Alabama’s Montgomery Motor Speedway, started third after the re-draw, and worked his way through the field to earn his first victory of the 2009 season.

“It was great to get a win and end a little bit of a drought we’ve been in this year,” said Bolen.  “We were fast from the time we unloaded.  We set the track record and went out there and beat Augie (Grill) and the rest of them for the win.  It was a great day for the whole team.”

A frequent visitor to Montgomery in 2009, Bolen knew he was going to have a strong car for both qualifying and the race even before he strapped into his #2 machine Saturday.

“We raced there the week before and we knew we were going to be pretty fast.  We had a pretty good idea for what we needed to do for this weekend.  We were quick off the truck.  It was going to come down to me and Augie for the pole.  He was pretty quick, too, so I knew it was going to be one of us who got the pole and also knew we had something for the track record.  Then we just went out there and set the record by a good bit.

“I rolled a three (in the post-qualifying re-draw), so I started third and pretty much rode in third for the first half of the race or so.  We were just cruising to make sure we had something for the end.  We passed Chase Elliott for second with about 20 to go and made the move for the lead with about 10 to go and just checked out from there.”

The winning effort nearly came to a halt mid-race, however.

“We were just riding there in third around halfway when a lapped car hit us and ripped the door off the car.  We were able to keep on going and get back up, though, to win the race in the last few laps.”

The victory not only ended a winless streak for the young racer, but also gave his #2 team plenty of momentum heading into several big late-season events throughout the Southeast.

“We’ve had a good car all year and had some good runs, but we just haven’t had any winning runs because of some bad luck.  Everybody stuck behind us all year long and it was great to win for them.  Augie and Frankie Grill put a great car behind us every week and something we can win with every time out.  This really pumped the guys up, and we’re looking forward to these last couple big races we have left for the year.”

The first of Bolen’s big late-season events comes this weekend in the Alabama 200 at South Alabama Speedway.  Further events on Bolen’s schedule include the Miller Lite Series finale at Mobile International Speedway (AL), the All-American 400 at the Nashville Fairgrounds and the Snowflake 100 and Snowball Derby 300 at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola this December.
