Reading through the articles of the past week here at The Frontstretch, I came across an article on what might be the biggest problem with NASCAR Nextel Cup, or something of the sort.
It is my opinion that the sport needs to fix the way they view rule infractions. In the Budweiser Shootout, NASCAR officials penalized Carl Edwards for passing none other than the golden boy of NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson. One has to wonder if it was a lesser named driver that was being passed…would they have penalized Carl?? It seems like when a decision to penalize someone has to be made, NASCAR considers who is involved rather than what actually happened on the racetrack.
The thing is, Edwards would have passed Johnson no matter what. Jimmie was pitting, and as we all clearly saw Carl actually lost a position or two even considering the cars that were pitting. He did not advance his position whatsoever. I say, next time, Carl, just plow into the back of the Golden Boys’ car and maybe get penalized for something you actually did. It is no big secret that NASCAR wants Jimmie to win the Cup…it is evident the way he is the highlight at every track. He had more camera time last year than the reigning champ Kurt Busch. Now, while I am no big Kurt Busch fan, he should have been given his due for winning the Cup in 2004.
Speaking of NASCAR’s Golden Boy, In case you all haven’t heard the 48 car failed post qualifying inspection. It was apparently for some type of device to lift the rear window of the car to give it more speed. It was called a BLATANT attempt to gain advantage. Jimmie’s crew chief was suspended for all of the rest of the Daytona action, and possibly will be suspended for future races, causing Jimmie must start at the back of the field for the Duel 150’s.
In my mind that isn’t penalty enough, and before you Jimmie Johnson fans get on me, no it isn’t cause I am against Jimmie. I think Jimmie should be required to use a provisional start for the Daytona 500, He shouldn’t be able to start a race where it really doesn’t matter where you start in comparison to where you finish. With these races, we all know that you can easily finish first even while starting last. Just look at where Earnhardt Jr. finished the Shootout….starting relatively last, he almost won the thing. Forcing this team to take a provisional instead of racing in the Duel 150’s would give him a starting spot in the back of the Daytona 500, in addition to preventing him from possibly getting good pit selection. I feel that ANY team, including my favorite driver’s team, that is caught more or less cheating should be penalized to the max. This sport is way too competitive, and the big teams have an advantage already over the little guys for one of the big boys to be cheating…
Kudos goes to Jeff Burton for capturing the Bud Pole for the Daytona 500. I can see the headline now…...
CINGULAR ONE car captures pole for first Nextel Cup Race in the 2006 season.
The C.E.O. over at Nextel is starting to petition NASCAR for a ban on all other cell phone companies sponsoring cars. Shoot, just look at all the poles held by that other cell phone sponsored ride, Alltel. Perhaps Nextel needs to sponsor a car as well so they can get as much air time as these other companies.
On to the Game…

Bob’s Corner Racing Game Rules
As I stated last week, this is one of the few races that the rules are different for. So here are the rules for this week.
Pick the winners and second place for each of the now DUEL 150’s, formerly known as the Twin 125’s. These Races are on Thursday, so your picks must be in quickly this week.
10 points will be awarded for each correct pick.
See NASCAR.com for the starting lineup for each race.
Pick who you think will finish in the top five for the Daytona 500
1st – 10 points
2nd – 12 points
3rd – 13 points
4th -14 points
5th – 15 points
Who you think will come in last in the running order of the drivers who finished in the Top 10 last season. This driver doesn’t have to finish last in the race, just last of these drivers.
In case you forget who those drivers are:
Tony Stewart
Greg Biffle
Carl Edwards
Mark Martin
Jimmie Johnson
Ryan Newman
Matt Kenseth
Jeremy Mayfield
Kurt Busch
Jeff Gordon….I removed Rusty who retired and put in the 11th place finisher.
A correct pick for which of the above drivers finishes last earns you 10 points.
Top finishing Rookie, they are:
Denny Hamlin
JJ Yeley
David Stremme
Reed Sorenson
Clint Bowyer
Martin Truex, Jr.
Brent Sherman
Chad Chaffin
You will earn 10 points for picking the top finishing rookie correctly in the Daytona 500.
Now, I know this is confusing for all you first timers to play the game. So let me give you an example of what you need to send…
EXAMPLE
Duel 150 picks
Race 1 – 1st place – Derrike Cope 2nd place – Mike Skinner
Race 2 – 1st place – Morgan Shepherd 2nd place – Kyle Petty
If you are unable to find the lists for the drivers in each race, I will be happy to email them to you… just email me and let me know.
Top 5 for Daytona 500
1. Derrike Cope
2. Mike Skinner
3. Morgan Shepherd
4. Kyle Petty
5. Kurt Shelmerdine
Last-Place Finisher Out of Last Year’s Top 10
Dale Earnhardt Jr. – No, I am not about to pick my driver Tony Stewart, and then if he does finish last, think I put the hex on him heh heh…
Top Finishing Rookie
Brent Sherman
If I was to have all of the above correct, I would have earned….
124 points. Now, no one has ever earned all the points in any given week, but that isn’t saying it can’t be done.
I usually will throw in a trivia question for a bonus as well, but since we have so much going on with Daytona and so many new players I am going to leave that out for the first week.
Last week we got started with just three items.
Pole for Daytona 500 – Jeff Burton. No one got this right.
2nd for Daytona 500 – Jeff Gordon. Believe it or not, only one person picked him for the outside pole.
Winner of Bud Shootout – Denny Hamlin – No One picked him for the win.
After Week 1 of Bob’s Racing Corner, congratulations goes to…
Fourby – the only person to have any points so far in Bob’s Corner Racing Game. He has the lead on everyone with 25 big points.
- All picks must be sent to me at Bobscornerracing@aol.com with “Daytona week 2 picks” in the subject area.
So that’s it for this week, Remember, GET THOSE PICKS IN BY RACETIME on Thursday. Any and all late entries will be disqualified.
Good Luck to all, and keep it above the yellow line this week.
