Frontstretch 2005 Preview: 10th - Matt Kenseth

Ren Jonsin · Sunday February 13, 2005

At the end of 2003, this team was at the top of their game, winning the Winston Cup Championship in the closest thing to perfect that had been seen in a long time. One season, two wins and six DNF’s later, the No. 17 Dewalt Taurus team of Matt Kenseth collected eighth place money, searching for the consistency that seemed to be a given just a short season prior.

Hoping to bring the 17 team back to the front, team owner Jack Roush has promised to make some changes, bringing up several of the players from the Busch program to replace some of the weekend raceday crew. Most of the major players, including Crew Chief Robbie Reiser will be returning in 2005 though.

Now I know what you all are saying. “Tenth place?? Are you nuts?? It’s freaking Matt Kenseth!” And yes, it’s true that the team won a couple of races in 2004, but they haven’t won in nearly a year. Since then though, they’ve scored six DNFs.

If the Dewalt team want to show us that we are wrong, they’ll need to focus on error-free racing and consistent finishes. But with the new faces on pit row, the team could take awhile to get to that point. In addition, Jack Roush will have a lot on his plate this season, focusing on a championship repeat for the No. 97 team of Kurt Busch, a successful rookie season for Carl Edwards and his No. 99 team, plus a strong final season for the No. 6 team as Mark Martin tackles his final full season in the Nextel Cup. That’s a whole lot of plate filling there even for someone of Roush’s resources, and it looks like Kenseth might get in at the back of the line on the buffet table.
