The action was untamed and fanatical on Saturday night June 2nd for the Stock and Roadrunner divisions. The Bryant Heating & Cooling Systems Indianapolis Speedrome® was ground zero for this intense on-track matchup of man and machine. Fans were astounded all the way to the checkered flag in the Stock Figure 8. While stories recall the memorable moments, only being there in attendance can fully place this exciting short track racing vividly in your mind. Join us for an upcoming event. A complete season schedule can be seen at www.speedrome.com.
An all Figure 8 evening was the task ahead for a talented field of Stocks. This round of the $5,000-to-win Chase for the Cup series left the launching pad with qualifications. The “sharp dressed man” Larry Hahn topped the time charts for the 5th time in 2012 with a lap of 18.702 seconds. Heat one saw reigning Brian Luttrell Memorial Figure 8 winner Mike Burgess first over Jeff A Smith and Rob Collins. The second heat had defending division champion Speedy Teepe tops over Bob Johnson and Kenny Smith.
The 25-lap feature saw the green flag with the veteran Johnson and rookie Kenny Smith doing battle. That duel eventually resembled a war making both cars casualties after a half dozen circuits. Collins then claimed first with Teepe on his tail. They clicked off laps until Speedy dove inside of Rob in turn three making contact. Both cars went for a spin moving Nigel Peters ahead, but the red flag soon emerged. The restart saw Nigel return to the top as Rob went backwards a bit. Peters powered on to snag his initial main event victory of 2012. Hahn came through for second in the final 100-feet as then runner-up Burgess and Collins collided at the crossover. Mike would slide his damaged car across the line for third.
The Roadrunners were sizzling from the start of time trials on this evening. Point leader Brian “Doc” Canter established a new track qualifying record with a lap of 14.269 seconds. He backed it up with a rare back to front win in the first heat. Aaron Smay was the runner-up and Rex Cox II third. The second preliminary had 2004 co-champ Ricky Martin victorious over Mike Gulley and Charles Graham. Gulley, the man who tied Martin for that class championship, first had to survive an opening segment duel with Ricky. Then he endured a late challenge from defending champion Junior Crabtree and last week’s winner Smay to earn his first regular season feature trophy since his championship year. Smay was second and Crabtree third to tighten the title race after a Canter DNF.
