Donnie Sloan Wins Second Straight Stock Oval
The most traditional division in short track racing, the Stocks, took to the Speedrome one-fifth-mile for a midweek classic program. Qualification came first and that session saw Nigel Peters top the time charts with an impressive lap of 13.960 seconds. Heat race one was captured by 1998 champ Victor Rybolt ahead of Larry Hahn and EJ Neat. The second heat had 2012 top rookie Christopher Green best over Donnie Sloan and Bob Johnson. The 25-circuit feature had Mr. Sloan slide into first place early on eyeing a repeat performance from the previous Saturday. And it wasn’t easy, but that was just what happened. Donnie becomes the first to Stocker repeat on the oval in 2012. Peters was the runner-up with Jeffrey Allen Smith third.
Schwartz Snags First Roadrunner Flagpole Win
One of the most competitive seasons in Roadrunner division history continued for a nearly standing-room-only Speedrome crowd August 1st. A pair of preliminary events were up first to tickle the appetite of the frenzy of fans on hand. The first saw former Late Model Figure 8 winner Oza Hoosier victorious in his initial season start over Mark Eads Jr and Brian Canter. The second heat had Casey Lee take his first trip to this classes winner’s circle over Jeremy Pierce and Ron Barger. The main event would be contested on the Flagpole course, a spectator favorite. And this one certainly didn’t disappoint! The lead changed hands a multitude of occasions with the most spectacular coming the final 100 feet. Lee Schwartz came from third to first in those closing yards to claim his 3rd career victory and second straight at the Speedrome. A deflating tire had Aaron Smay settle for second with Eads stealing third in the end as well. You had to be in attendance to appreciate this one folks.
August Point Racing Launches for the Hornets with Shumaker Win
Just one month of points pursuit remains for one driver to win a monthly title and three more racers to earn berths in the Chase for the Cup championship playoffs. A sturdy 16-vehicle congregation was on hand to start things off with a bang for the four-cylinder speedsters. Heat race one saw David “Batman” Coil take a victory lap after besting Josh Reel and Melanie Coil. The second stanza had “Chargin” Chip Branham a winner over Don VanValkenburg III and Brad Brooks. The feature had a very impressive run from the back of the pack from third-generation driver Cody Shumaker. The young gun took the now infamous #54 on a passing binge to win his second straight feature win and third triumph of the regular season. “Mr. Money” Brooks was second with veteran Allen Hargraves rounding out the podium finishers.
