AMRA Upgrades Tech/ Inspections Crucial

Sunday January 20, 2013

Mike Haught Named Director of Tech

The American Motor Racing Association (AMRA) has named longtime racing personality Mike Haught as the Director of Tech for the 2013 racing season. Other roving tech inspectors working with the organization will be veteran racing personnel Ed Venham, Rick Venham, and Jason Roberts and possibly one other notable racing figure.

“We are delighted to have this group working with the AMRA. They bring a wealth of racing knowledge to the organization and are aboard with the AMRA theme of ‘keeping costs down and keeping the playing field consistent’. They also have a strong background in racing and the ability to be fair, but firm.”

The group will be working in conjunction with weekly track inspectors. All will be equals in enforcing and interpretting the rules, however, every organization needs someone on the front lines, and Haught fills that role. The group will be there for support and supplementing an already knowledgeable base of AMRA inspectors.

Haught has been a driver, a crewman, and track official for many, many years. “He knows racing from both sides of the fence,” noted Director of Racing Operations Scott Wolfe. “He will be the go-to man as far as tech goes. Most rules are pretty clear cut and track inspectors will have the nightly call on a weekly basis. We are going to support those calls. If it’s an interpretation of a rule, the team will collaborate and Mike will make the call.”

“Our goal is not to catch anyone cheating,” noted Wolfe. “We want to catch driver’s getting it right. The additional checks and balances will hopefully restore AMRA to its premise of keeping the playing field level.”

“On any given night, the regular track inspector’s decision is final. If any of our roving staff is not at a track that night, the AMRA inspector hired by the track is final for that night. Any and all discrepancies will be resolved during the next week.”

Haught said, “I am honored to serve in this capacity with the AMRA. it is a great opportunity to serve racers at a higher level and to have a positive impact on the future of racing in our area. I am looking forward to 2013.”

All track promoters, track inspectors, and AMRA staff are invited to the tech inspector’s meeting Feb. 9 at Evans Contstruction in Mineral Wells from 9 a.m. to 11:30.
