By the Numbers - Southern Power Rankings Dirt Super Late Model Mid-Year Report

Sunday July 14, 2013

The Mid-Point of the season finds Ray Cook narrowly ahead of Jonathan Davenport

by Steve Hixson

North Carolina’s Ray Cook (# 53) took a slim points lead in the Southern Power RANKINGS for Dirt Super Late Models at the mid-year report. Calculating Top-5 finishes for all dirt track SLM races around the South region of the United States, that pay atleast $3,000 to-Win, Cook leads by a mere twenty (20) points over Georgia racer Jonathan Davenport. With more emphasis on wins, second place runner ups thru fifth place finishes are calculated from the beginning of the season in January to the last event in November. Cook gained the advantage this past Saturday night winning his 5th SLM event of the season. Both he and Davenport share the same number of wins (5) as well as the number of runner-up finishes (2), but Cook maintains a slightly better Top-5 average. Races are tabulated from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and even Kentucky. Drivers generally do not get included in the Southern Dirt SLM Power RANKINGS if they follow any of the National touring series (i.e. Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, World of Outlaws Late Model Series) in effort to keep separate lists of top drivers, although some fall within the range when they race close to home. There are several other rankings promotions similar to this one, but none calculate just the specific South region. The following is an editorial opinion based on an unbiased formula calculating wins as well as Top-5 finishing percentage figures.
