World Finals World of Outlaws Sprint Car Recap 11-8

Saturday November 9, 2013

Donny Schatz did all he could to cut into the lead of Daryn Pittman by winning the Sprint Car feature on Friday night at the Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Daryn Pittman has led the point standings since the first race of the 2013 season. He came into the World Finals 42 points ahead of Donny Schatz. While the lead might seem insurmountable, anything can happen in a 410 sprint car. When the dust settled at the Dirt Track at Charlotte, Donny Schatz had scored the win and shaved 10 points off of Pittman’s lead. Schatz took the lead on a lap 13 restart and never looked back. Brian Brown took several shots as the laps wound down but the five-time champion withstood every one to take the win. Joey Saldana crossed the line third, Shane Stewart was fourth and Jason Sides rounded out the top 5.

The green flag flew on the sprint car feature and, unlike the Big Blocks and Late Models, the Sprint Cars took to the high side of the track and made two lanes work. Brown, who established during the Dash that he had a very fast car, pulled out to substantial lead on the first lap with Schatz following him in second. Schatz was putting pressure on Brown as they began working through the back of the pack. On lap 12, Kerry Madsen lost control exiting turn four directly in front of Brown, but the leader made an evasive move to maintain the top spot. When the field came to the restart, Dale Blaney spun in the back of the pack which resulted in a single file restart due to the field not completing a single lap. When the race went back to green, Brown took the middle lane through one and two while Schatz went to the high side and powered around the leader.

The remainder of the race went green with Schatz carving through traffic and Brown looking to take advantage of the opportunities when Schatz was slowed. Meanwhile, Pittman closed in on a battle between Sides and Cody Darrah. The three drivers went three-wide, multiple times, including the run to the checkered flag. Pittman was able to get his nose ahead of Darrah as they crossed the finish line which gave him sixth place. The two points he earned for that finish very well could make the difference in the championship.

“The way we’re running right now we really don’t want this season to end,” said Schatz, “I’m not going to lie, if we can’t get the job done in the championship I’m going to be disappointed. We came and had a good night to win and we’re going to come back tomorrow night and try to do the same thing. We’re going to stay positive and try to do everything we can for tomorrow.”
