The track, located north of Muskegon in Rothbury, Michigan that started hosting events in 1980, has undergone a wide variety of changes during the off-season including the biggest and highest profile change of all; a move to Saturday nights for the new season.
Opening Night 2014 is set for Saturday, April 12th featuring a Full 7-in-1 highlighted by the premier weekly division within the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) DIRTcar Racing Series; the UMP DIRTcar Late Models. Also on the card will be the rest of the tracks weekly divisions led by the ultra competitive UMP DIRTcar Modifieds as well as the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, Bombers, Mini Stocks, Warriors & Young Guns.
Prior to Opening Night, there will be a 2014 Drivers Meeting set for Thursday, March 6th at 7:00p.m., at the North Muskegon VFW located at: 1061 Witham Drive, Muskegon, MI 49445.This Meeting is scheduled to handle Registrations, Pit Reservations and More for the upcoming new season. The second and third dates are set for Saturday, April 5th and Tuesday, April 8th giving teams’ ample opportunity to prepare for the new season and new surroundings.
Some of the highlights of the 2014 racing season includes one of the biggest events of the early season; the 8th annual Player Hater 50 will see the cars and stars of the Sunoco American Late Model Series venture to Winston to take on the UMP DIRTcar Late Models weekly competitors for a $2,500 to win top prize. The series returns on Saturday, June 14th for their second and final appearance of the season.
The always popular Allstar Performance Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour Presented by Lane Automotive will make one stop to Winston Speedway in 2014 on Saturday, May 10th. Several specials for the weekly competitors dot the 2014 schedule including the Kenny Blondeel Memorial for the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks on Saturday, July 19th. In addition, the Sandy TenBrink Memorial on Saturday, June 7th and the Tim Epplett Memorial on Saturday July 5th are the special events for the Bombers. The Mini Outlaws will make two appearances on Saturday, May 24th as well as Saturday, June 7th. Plus there are more special events in the works for the weekly teams that will be announced at a later date.
In addition to the new night of racing, there are several new faces that will be joining the Winston Speedway staff for the 2014 racing season with the biggest change of all being the man in charge of Operations; Three-Time Track Champion, Dan Dykman has turned in his steering wheel and the Twin Lake, Michigan native joins Owner/Promoter, Tom Sprague’s management staff as the Track’s new General Manager.
Since Dykman has been at the controls, there have been non-stop facility improvements happening at the track despite the treacherous cold winter that West Michigan has experienced. The most noticeable change is the new Wall all the way around the 3/8s mile that will greet competitors and fans when they arrive for the first time. Another change that will benefit both drivers and fans alike is the new Pylon-Style Scoreboard that will be available for everyone to keep track of all the action happening on the race surface.
There will be a new voice on the Public Address system for the new season as P.A. Announcer, 43-year-old Andy O’Riley, a Muskegon native, who started calling the races at the track in 2004 will be joined up in the booth by 20-year-old Brian Osborne, who calls Grand Rapids, Michigan home and already has four years of experience working at Cherry Raceway, I-96 Speedway and Mid-Michigan Raceway Park. Osborne will bring his professional style, wide array of statistics and a lot of fun to the Winston family on Saturday nights in 2014 along-side O’Riley. Osborne also remains the voice of Cherry Raceway on Friday nights in 2014 as well.
For the drivers and teams, there’s New Clay laid out in an effort to improve the racing surface while the track will go to Transponder Scoring for the 2014 racing season with the recently purchased Westhold Transponder Scoring System as returning Head Scorer, Angie Gilmore is back for the 2014 campaign armed with the new system while Track Statistician, Janet Taylor returns as well. Another new face joining the staff is new Flagman, Mike Lee who previously worked at the now defunct Thunderbird Raceway in years past.
There are even more improvements to get done before the doors open for the 34th year of racing at the Rothbury, Michigan speed plant. For the 2014 racing season and every Saturday night, the seven weekly divisions will all be in action giving the race fans who patronize the speedway their monies’ worth each and every night. For the new year, the Pit Gates Open at 4:00p.m., Grandstands Open at 5:00p.m., Practice Starts at 6:00p.m., and Racing Begins at 7:00p.m.
