Second Fiddle: Around the Busch and Craftsman Truck Series

Toni Montgomery · Thursday October 6, 2005

I know this should be Busch week but we’re going to do something a little different over the next two weeks. This week I’m going to ask for your assistance. I want to hear from you this week. I want to know what interests you about the Busch and/or the Craftsman Truck Series. What is it you want to hear about in this space or maybe what is it you don’t want to ever see here again. Next week, I’ll let you know what the responses were. Now I know calling for reader response is a little risky. I’ve done this before only to be met by staggering silence. If that’s the case, you’ll hear about that too along with my comments on it because I’m sure even hearing nothing means something.

As I mentioned last week, this time of year the idea well gets a little low. This column has been appearing every week since February and we’re left with just a little over a month until the off-season. At first, my idea seemed like a good way to replenish the idea store just a little but as I thought about it, I decided there’s more to it than that. Not only will it give us some direction for the rest of this year, this will help me decide on any tweaks to this space over the off-season. That’s mostly what we do while you are reading re-runs. We tweak and remodel for next season.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that there is nothing of interest going on in either the Busch or Craftsman Truck Series. There are always things going on. We’ve already touched on many of them to varying degrees. And that is one of my concerns. A few of the biggest issues, both good and bad, have already appeared here this year. Some of them have been here several times but even so they are still in the front of my mind. However I hesitate to write about them again because I just picture this phantom reader in my head, saying "Oh no, here she goes again." I hear the sound of thousands of mice clicking away from me. Then again, maybe I’m wrong. That’s the point of asking to hear from you. Maybe the big issues to me are also the big issues to you and maybe you’re not done talking (or reading) about them either.

This space is as much yours as it is mine. Maybe there are things here that don’t appear enough or have never appeared at all that you are interested in. That’s the bottom line. I have my opinions and issues that are important to me and I thank you for visiting here each week to see what I think and what I feel is important, but maybe I’m missing things that are important to the rest of fandom. Maybe there are things that are important to me that no one else cares about, and quite frankly it does me no good to write about those. It’s a gigantic waste of time to spend it writing about things if no one is going to read them. So I invite you to help make this space yours too.

If you are still staring into space with no idea what to suggest, I can offer some ideas to help. I’ll start with some things I have covered and could easily rant on some more about, but I have no idea if you’ve already heard enough on them. Buschwhackers are a subject near if not necessarily dear to my heart. That has been one of my pet peeves this year and I could probably say volumes more about them. Is this something you’d gladly have me go on about of have you heard enough? Along with Buschwhackers come the issues of the Busch Series point system and purse money.

Chase formats. I did hit on that idea once as far as Busch goes and only vaguely in trucks, but maybe you aren’t done with that idea. Or maybe you hate the Chase and want to hear more about why it’s a terrible idea for either series. Maybe you want to hear more about the championship battles in either series. Maybe you want to hear more about the individual drivers in each and how their seasons have gone.

Maybe you just want more driver profiles, regardless of whether they are involved in the championship fight or not. Driver profiles are not something I have really devoted much space to but they could be. Maybe you’re new and want more information on the veterans or maybe you want to know more about the rookies and the unfamiliar names. Once or twice, this space has been devoted to driver interviews. If that’s something you want to see more of, we might be able to arrange that. Busch and truck series drivers are fairly accessible and I’m sure there are quite a few that would love to tell you more about themselves.

Possibly you want more commentary on the actual races themselves. Maybe you are into the tech side of things or are trying to learn about that side of the sport so you’d like to see more about the cars themselves. Maybe you’re curious about the teams who build and support those cars and you’d like to see more about the crews and the behind the scenes people.

This is your big chance to tell me what you want to see. Don’t be shy. The success of this whole exercise and what you are going to see from me for the rest of this season and next year depends on you.
