Scott Riggs might have stolen his teammate's thunder with his pole winning run, but Kahne retook his spot atop the field by posting the fastest lap at 183.586 mph in the second Nextel Cup Series practice session. Kyle Busch was second fastest, followed by Robby Gordon, Clint Bowyer, and Jimmie Johnson to round out the top five.
Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Jeff Burton, Mark Martin, and Carl Edwards complete the fastest ten. The remainder of the top 20 speeds in practice were posted by Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, David Gilliland, pole sitter Scott Riggs in 14th, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Casey Mears, Jeff Gordon, Reed Sorenson, Matt Kenseth, and David Stremme in 20th.
Elliott Sadler, Todd Bodine, Bobby Labonte, Tony Raines, Tony Stewart, Sterling Marlin, Martin Truex Jr., Jamie McMurray, Dale Jarrett, and Joe Nemechek clocked in 21st through 30th. The next groups starts with Mike Skinner in 31st, J.J. Yeley, Brian Vickers, Dave Blaney, Jeff Green, Ken Schrader, Michael Waltrip, Kyle Petty, Ryan Newman, and Todd Kluever in 40th. Newman crashed early in the session and will need to go to a backup car. Because of that he will have to drop to the back of the field to start the race. Terry Labonte, Travis Kvapil, and Mike Bliss round out the field.
