South Boston Speedway Idle Saturday; Miss Utility 150 Set For Sept. 15

SOUTH BOSTON, VA…South Boston Speedway is idle this weekend, taking the weekend off in deference to Saturday night’s NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. However, things will heat up considerably when NASCAR racing returns to South Boston Speedway on Saturday night, September 15 at 7 p.m. with the running of the Miss Utility 150. The September 15 Miss Utility 150 will be the next-to-last points race of the season at South Boston Speedway and at least two of the track’s four division points races could be decided. A 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division will be the featured event of the Miss Utility 150 racing program. Also, set on the five-race program are races for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the INEX Legends Cars Series and the Legendary Ford Flatheads Racing Association. The Miss Utility 150 race day schedule calls for pit gates open at 1 p.m. Practice will go from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Qualifying time trials start at 5:15 p.m. and the first race will start at 7 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. with the track’s Early Bird special admission of $8 for adults in effect until 6:30 p.m. Adult admission after that will be $10. Youths ages 10-15 will be admitted for $5. Kids ages 9 and under will be admitted free.

The two-division point’s races that could be locked up in the Miss Utility 150 racing program are the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division and the Limited Sportsman Division. In the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division, 10-time winner Adam Barker of Hurt, Va. holds a 52-point lead over Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. who drove his Ford to victory in the 150-lap race here on September 1. If Barker wins that race or if a combination of circumstances plays out between the two drivers that would result in Barker emerging from the race with a 60-point lead or better, Barker would all but have the division championship trophy in hand.

The other driver that can leave South Boston Speedway at the end of the night on September 15 all but having the title trophy in hand is defending Limited Sportsman Division champion Bruce Anderson. Anderson, from South Boston, Va., holds a 66-point lead over Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. entering the September 15 event and, as in Barker’s case, a 60-point lead or better would all but put the locks on a second straight division championship for Anderson. Still very much up for grabs are the points races in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modified Division. Mark Francisco of Halifax. Va. has cut defending division champion Chuck Watkins’ lead to 18 points as the Pure Stock Division competitors look forward to the season’s next-to-last points race. The other division championship that is up for grabs is the Southern Vintage Modified Division where Randy Smith of Bassett, Va. leads Rodney Cook of Reidsville, N.C. by eight points and Donnie Lacks of Lynchburg, Va. by 10 points. That division will not be in action on September 15, but will be a part of the action on September 22 when the track holds its final points event of the season.
