Friday June 26, 2009

LOUDON, N.H. (June 25, 2009) – Students of Franklin Pierce University’s Fitzwater Center will experience the real pressures of deadline journalism at New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend.

Senior Fitzwater Scholar Jason Schachere, of Marblehead, Mass., Senior Fitzwater Scholar Abbie Tumbleson, of Whitney, Penn., graduate student and head men’s basketball coach, David Chadbourne, from Jaffrey, N.H., graduate student Jason Raft, from Concord, N.H., graduate student and Assistant Athletic Director Daniel Blair, of Keene, N.H., and Ed French, Director of Franklin Pierce’s College of Graduate and Professional Studies MBA Programs, will be reporting on all of the events during the LENOX Industrial Tools 301 weekend.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Franklin Pierce University, based in Rindge, N.H., have formed a partnership to help further the education of journalism students. The University plans to send undergraduate students back to the speedway for the SYLVANIA 300 in September.

Franklin Pierce’s Fitzwater Center for Communication houses the University’s Mass Communications department, one of only two colleges in New Hampshire with Associated Press accreditation. The Center is named for Marlin Fitzwater, who served as press secretary to presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

“The Fitzwater Center is thrilled to be taking part in this New Hampshire Motor Speedway program, said Dr. Kristen Nevious, director of the Fitzwater Center. “This is the kind of life-changing experience that frames the transition from student to true professional. We are grateful to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for providing a venue for taking what we have learned in the classroom and applying it in the field.”

Dr. Nevious will be accompanying the group at the speedway.

The graduate students will be posting photos and stories online for the Pierce Media Group at www.piercemediagrouponline.com, as well as utilizing YouTube and Facebook.

New University President Dr. James Birge will also visit the speedway on Sunday as a guest of honor.

“Franklin Pierce University is providing students a solid foundation in the principles of classic reporting and new media,” said Jerry Gappens, executive vice president and general manager of New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “We are pleased to work with the students of the Fitzwater Center for Communication in helping them gain valuable experience as they hone their journalistic skills.”

Do you want the chance to win a free Frontstretch T-Shirt, and are you really good at talking about NASCAR? Well, we have the perfect opportunity for you. Our staff will be giving away a free T-Shirt to the reader who makes the best post in our Frontstretch Forum between now and the end of the season. So, what makes a good post? It’s pretty hard to impress us, but here are some things we are looking for:

Does your post spark passionate reactions from other readers? Are you commenting on meaningful NASCAR-related events? Do your posts have substance? In other words, “Dale Jr. is the best driver ever” or “Danica Patrick is hot” will not cut it.

So go to the Frontstretch Forums, post early, post often, and post well! We’ll announce the winner following the final race of the season at Homestead.
