Marcos Ambrose returns to fill us in on Speedweeks from his point of view. Marcos will keep us up to date on his Sprint Cup Series season every month. If you have anything you’d like to ask Marcos, we encourage you to submit your questions so he can answer them in future diaries!
We had a great Speedweeks. We didn’t finish the race; we had an oil leak. It’s unfortunate because we really had a marvelous run up until that point in the race. The whole week went great. We had top speed and we looked smart all week. It’s just a shame it didn’t work out for us.
We were already out of the race when the track problems started. It’s unfortunate because it was a really great day for NASCAR up to that point. It was a stellar crowd, a beautiful day and unbelievable racing. Really good stuff. It’s a shame that it happened but I think that NASCAR reacted really well to get the race in. They’re racers at heart and pay attention to everything, cars, tires, track. They got the race in, but I’m sure it’s something that they wish hadn’t happened.
My family will be returning from Australia to join me soon and I can’t wait, especially when you have a tough race like this and it makes you wonder why you make the sacrifice to do this. I’m really excited to have them come back. I know they enjoy their time there, but I look forward to having them get back.
One of our readers has asked if I plan to run the race at Road America that was added to the Nationwide Series schedule to replace the Milwaukee Mile. No, I’m not going to do that. We’re at another race course in Sonoma where we think we can win for Sprint Cup, so I am not planning to go there. I am going to run the other two road-course races in the Nationwide Series this year though.
We head to the West Coast for awhile next. I’ll just stay out there because it’s a long way to fly, so we’ll just take a bit of a holiday between the two races. It’s a great place to spend a few days. What we really look forward to is seeing how our car reacts to these downforce racetracks. It can be kind of hard to get around on these mile-and-a-half speedways. Las Vegas is one and a half miles and it will give us a chance to see what we’ve got and how we stack up. We hope this week goes well and if these West Coast races go well we have the rest of the year to get caught up and get back on track.
I’m glad to be back in the thick of it and it’s great to get the season started. It’s an awesome NASCAR Sprint Cup championship and it’s great to actually get the season underway and get started. It’s not good how we got the season started really. You can try to make it look good any way you want but at the end of the day we’re still starting at a disadvantage for the year, but we’ve got a whole year and we’re not looking to just take it easy. We want to win championships and win races and there are plenty more to go.
