Marcos Ambrose Driver Diary: Rotten Luck, a Pretty Hard Hit & a Little Mud on the Tires

Part of racing is frustration, and we all understand not every weekend and every stretch in your career can be all that great. We’ve had just really terrible luck, tires blowing out, getting caught up in other people’s crashes. Just general problems. It hasn’t been a pretty month and I look forward to May being gone. It’s time for June to be here and to get our summer going.

As for how the Pocono race ended, I don’t know, I’ve got no comment on that I guess. The yellow came out and we had a green/white/checkered to race it home and some guys made it back and some guys didn’t. It ruined our day. We were running 15th or 13th or somewhere around there before the caution came out, we got caught up in that crash and finished in the 30s. I’m not sure what to say about it to be honest with you. It doesn’t make any difference to me. The yellow came out and you’ve just got to deal with it. It didn’t help our day, to go from finishing 15th to finishing 30th, but it’s just what it is.

I took a blow in that accident. I hit the inside track barrier at an angle and I destroyed our car which I’m pretty upset about. It took the wind out of me pretty good. That’s probably one of the hardest impacts I’ve taken for a long time. It’s just a testament to the safety of these cars. I took a big lick and didn’t have a bruise. I was just a little sore, that’s it.

I ran in Tony Stewart’s charity race, the Prelude to the Dream last night. I’m actually still at Eldora right now, we’re going to head out of here in about another half hour or so. It’s a great event. It’s one of the most fun nights of the year for me. Coming to the Cup Series, to be included in the NASCAR community at this level, it’s just great to be a part of it all. I really enjoy Tony. He’s taught me a lot both on the racetrack and off the racetrack about how to conduct yourself. Just to be able to come here and support his charity and his event and just raise so much money, it’s really special. It’s a special night and it’s just great to hang out with everybody. I’ll keep coming back and doing this as long as I get asked.

I finished around 13th or 15th, somewhere around there. I had a really good night. I haven’t run much on dirt so it’s all brand new to me. I had a really good night going. I just really enjoyed coming from the back. I was heading toward the front and ran out of time and talent.

I didn’t get up there like I had thought to test in advance. I’ve been refocusing completely on the NASCAR stuff and I just didn’t get a chance to test anything, so I was a little green here and that definitely cost me, but I enjoy it and I had a good night. I had a good speed test. It took me a little while to get up to speed, but in the feature I was pretty happy with how I ran.

We’re going to do a little bit more dirt racing. Brandon Kinser and the boys helped me out with the car and I want to pay them back for it over the summer and have a little fun with it.

My boat I had been working on is on hold at the moment. I’m running bad on the racetrack. I’d feel better about working on the boat if I wasn’t, but right now we’re running so bad and you just have to refocus on racing and try to turn the season around. The boat unfortunately has been put on hold for a little bit.

I don’t usually look past the week I’m going to. That’s Michigan this week, and I’m about to head up there now. I can have a lot of fun there and we’ll try and win the race. We keep moving along. We’ve got road-course races coming up which has always been good for us. We’ve done some testing the last few weeks getting ready for those events and we feel pretty good about it. We’ve just got to turn up and hopefully deliver.

We’ll also be doing the Watkins Glen and Montreal Nationwide Series road-course races. We’re not doing the Road America race.
