Breaking: Source Claims Montoya Threatened Legal Action vs. Newman

In late-breaking news this morning, “Jim Noble”:http://www.twitter.com/Noble_Jim/ from SIRIUS is reporting that Juan Pablo Montoya threatened legal action against Ryan Newman after his punch in the hauler at Darlington. It was only then, according to Noble’s sources that NASCAR chose to issue a $50,000 secret fine to Newman.

No side of the story is issuing comments at this time. It’s deja vu for Newman, who spent this race weekend last year dodging questions about a $50,000 secret fine issued after criticism following the April race at Talladega.

Here was Ryan Newman’s response in the Media Center just moments ago:

“I’ve always said that private things happen privately, and what happens in the trailer stays in the trailer. There’s a reason we have private meetings, and there’s a reason that NASCAR does things the way they do.”

“I don’t know anything about the legal action part of things. I do know when we’re talking about fines, whether it’s private or public, there’s nothing we should elaborate on because it’s not something our sport should be proud of. To me, it’s something for you guys to write but it’s not something that’s good for our sport so it’s not something we ought to keep talking about, first of all. And every other sport to my knowledge out there has it: whether it’s golf, or basketball, football, whatever. I don’t know how they handle it, whether it’s publicly or privately or both, but I’ll just say it’s a negative aspect of our sport. We should all be talking about the positive things.”
