Keepin’ it Short – NASCAR deals another blow to short track racing at the touring level

Keepin’ it Short – NASCAR deals another blow to short track racing at the touring level

This week NASCAR announced that the Nationwide race that has been held at Raceway Park in Indianapolis for thirty years is going to move the six miles down the road to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Somehow the people making the decisions in Daytona think it is going to be a good thing but it would appear to be sending another message that loyalty is once again well down the list of qualities that matter to the sanctioning body. Raceway Park has hosted a race every year since the first season of the Nationwide Series in 1982 and every one of them has been sponsored by Kroger Grocery Stores, the longest running continuous sponsorship of a race in the touring series of NASCAR.
There have long been rumors that the sanctioning body was interested in moving the race to the big track but the rumor has always been that Tony George refused to do it out of professional consideration for a fellow track in the same city. Now that George is out of the picture at the big track it appears that the professional courtesy is also out the window. The saddest part of the decision is that Raceway Park is almost always the best race of the entire Nationwide season and it is now going to be replaced by an event that will most certainly be much more strung out with little passing and limited excitement. Add to that the fact that IMS has some 250,000 permanent seats and the crowd will probably be in the 20,000 range it is going to be an embarrassment to the series.
The rumor being bandied about is that Raceway Park was balking at the sanctioning fees and, considering they have one of the smallest purses on the schedule, it would appear that they gave the sanctioning body the opening they were looking for to take yet another short track race away. It is truly a shame that not only is a longtime supporter of the series being kicked to the curb once again in pursuit of the almighty dollar, but it is also a slap in the face to a sponsor who has been there for every year of the series.
The folks who make the decisions can try and put all of the lipstick they want on this pig but the entire decision reeks of yet another thumbing of their nose at the loyal fans and traditionalists who have put up with too many slights on tradition over the last decade and a half. When the race is held next season and the stands look like a Montreal Expos game broke out it will be very interesting to hear the explanations as to why the attendance didn’t meet expectations.

Whelen All-American National Championship Update
Lee Pulliam finally scored a victory in a race away from Motor Mile Speedway when Philip Morris was participating, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the national points lead because Keith Rocco was on an absolute tear in Connecticut. Rocco took home the trophy in three races over three days to reassume the top spot in the points. Rocco scored wins at Thompson on Thursdsay night, Stafford on Friday and Waterford on Saturday to make it the first three day sweep in Connecticut in his career. It was one of the few things that the defending National Champion had never done in racing. Points are going to get harder to come by for Rocco at this point because he has 18 top five finishes so he’ll only be able to gain a handful of points for any races that he is able to win and will most certainly need full fields.
Pulliam on the other hand, while he’s reached the maximum number of races still only has 15 top five finishes so he should be able to add some more substantial points to his total if he can continue his winning ways with full fields. This past weekend he was able to score the win at South Boston thanks to an extremely rare failure of the Kowalsky engine in Morris’ ride. Pulliam now has 11 wins but only four of them are maximum point wins while Morris has five and Rocco has six. While Morris’ engine failure prevented him from notching another win it was a poor result that will easily be erased with another win now that he’s at the maximum number of races.
The race for the championship certainly looks like a three driver race but C.E. Falk still has the potential to make a run if he can get on a roll and score some more wins. Falk still has three points races before he reaches the maximum but he’ll need to start notching a bunch of wins if he’s going to make a run at the championship.
1) Keith Rocco – 25 races – 13 wins – 18 top 5s – 22 top 10s – 657 points
2) Lee Pulliam – 18 races – 11 wins – 15 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 627 points
3) Philip Morris – 18 races – 11 wins – 14 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 601 points
4) C.E. Falk, III – 15 races – 4 wins – 12 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 518 points
5) Nate Monteith – 18 races – 7 wins – 15 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 473 points
6) Lee Tissot – 16 races – 3 wins – 13 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 427 Points
7) Frank Deiny Jr. – 16 races – 0 wins – 10 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 426 points
8) Ryan Preece – 16 races – 3 wins – 13 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 413 points
9) Brandon Davis – 11 races – 6 wins – 10 top 5s – 10 top 10s – 408 points
10) Daniel Pope III – 15 races – 3 wins – 13 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 397
points *

**Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series,
the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20.
Second place receives two fewer points, and so-on through the field. Race
winners receive an additional five bonus points. For example, if there are
20 cars, the winner receives 45 points, second gets 38 and third 36. If
there are 15 cars, the winner received 35 points, second gets 28 and third
26. The top 18 races count towards the National Championship for a driver. A
perfect season for a driver would be 18 race wins with 20 car fields which
equates to 810 points. The first driver to reach 810 points is declared the
National Champion in the event of a tie.**
