Keepin’ it Short – Suggestions for Local Short Track Owners

Most race fans have heard the old axiom, if you want to make a small fortune in racing start out with a big one. That saying not only holds true for race team owners but is generally true for local short track owners too. Just like with team owners there are always exceptions, but for the most part the people running the bull rings around the country are not living the high life. They do what they do because they love to and, if they remember to do a few things, they can keep their competitors and fans happy which in turn will put a little more dough in their pockets.

Local short track fans are a loyal, close knit bunch. If they are treated well and have an enjoyable night at the track they’re very likely to share that experience with their local racing friends and entice them to come out to the track as well. One of the best ways to make the experience memorable is for the track promoter to be available and grateful for the people who come to his track. Brad Allen runs Ace Speedway in Altamahaw, NC and knows exactly how to make people know they are appreciated. It is very common for him to walk around the track during a night of racing and shake everyone’s hand and thank them for coming to the race–and not just the competitors but every single person in the facility. It is possible for him to shake a few thousand hands on a really good night but he’ll do it and the people who are in attendance remember when that happens to them and will be at least a little more likely to return to the facility because of it.

Another thing to remember is that people visit to see great racing and the better the racing the more people who will come to the track. The best racing occurs when there are plenty of cars on the track that are capable of winning and the more cars that come through the back gate the better the chance for that to happen. If a promoter wants to get people to come through the back gate they need to remember that it is the people who are coming through that gate that are causing the people to come through the front gate.

There’s nothing wrong with making a little money on the competitors who show up to race at your track but you’ll be better served by making it affordable for them to come to the track and compete. Racers will remember that tracks that consistently charge them $10-$20 for pit passes versus the ones who ream them for $50-$70. They also remember which track charges them $450 for a set of tires as opposed to $600. Racing is not a cheap sport and most of the guys running at local tracks are struggling to get their cars together to get to the race track. Short track owners would be wise to not compound that struggle by pinching them once they get to the track.

When making calls at the track, always do your best to be consistent. If you send someone to the back for spinning another driver, do the same to the next driver guilty of the same offense. Don’t make one driver come from the back to the front every time they are anywhere near a caution while you let another consistently have their spot back when they are deep in the mix of most everything happening on the track.

People complain all of the time that NASCAR makes different decisions for the same violations all of the time and it alienates fans. Doing the same kind of waffling on a local track will have even more dire consequences because there are fewer people in the mix in general. Local drivers have intensely loyal fans who come to watch them every week, and if they see their favorite driver getting the short end of the stick consistently, they’re probably going to either stop coming to your track or follow their favorite when they give up. Make sure you do your best to be consistent, even if it isn’t the popular thing to do.

Finally hang onto the old promoters precept that rear ends in the seats are always preferred to empty seats. You can’t sell a hotdog to someone who isn’t there, so don’t rake your fans over the coals when it comes to ticket prices. Getting them in the door is the most important thing because they will spend some money at your track or they’ll tell friends what a good time they had or they’ll just brag about what a bargain your place was. It doesn’t matter what they say as long as they’re happy about their experience. Bowman-Gray Stadium has some of the largest crowds every week of any short track in the country and they generally charge $10 to get in the gate. Last Saturday was one of their Ladies Nights where all females get into the stands for $1. That’s right, one single dollar. You don’t find that too often any more and they do it about once a month.

Local short tracks are the backbone of racing around the country and the inspiration for this column every week. With the way car counts have dropped over the last few years and the struggles many fans are having affording a trip to the races, the folks running the tracks will be greatly served by making it a bit more affordable and a great destination. Trust a loyal local race fan, you won’t be disappointed.

Whelen All-American National Championship Update

The front runners at the head of the pack for the National Championship in the Whelen All-American Series are down to clawing and scratching out as many remaining points as they can over the last couple of months of the season. C.E. Falk is the only driver in the top 6 who has not maxed out his race count so still has the ability to make substantial gains. The other drivers at the top are simply trying to upgrade from poor finishes to better finishes.

Keith Rocco has notched 19 top-5 finishes so he’s truly nibbling away and hoping for wins with maximum car counts in order to be able to increase his points by as much as possible. Rocco did notch another victory this past week and ran two races but his point total only increased by two. Pulliam did not win the Rusty Harpe Memorial at Caraway but he was able to record a second-place finish in a maximum car field which replaced a poor finish from early in the year. Pulliam’s finish with over 20 cars in the race added 36 points to his season total and allowed him to move into the top spot of the standings by a whopping four points.

Three time champion Philip Morris did not race this past week so he remained in third place with 601 total points. Falk was able to not only put a win on the board but it was a max point day winning the Hampton Heat 200 at Langley Speedway. The 45 points puts him within 100 points of the top spot and, with two races before he reaches the max, could have him poised to make it into the top three in a couple more weeks.

1) Lee Pulliam – 19 races – 11 wins – 16 top 5s – 17 top 10s – 663 points
2) Keith Rocco – 27 races – 14 wins – 19 top 5s – 24 top 10s – 659 points
3) Philip Morris – 18 races – 11 wins – 14 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 601 points
4) C.E. Falk, III – 16 races – 5 wins – 13 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 563 points
5) Nate Monteith – 19 races – 7 wins – 16 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 489 points
6) Ryan Preece – 18 races – 3 wins – 14 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 459 points
7) Bill Leighton, Jr. – 13 races – 3 wins – 13 top 5s – 13 top 10s – 453 points
8) Lee Tissot – 17 races – 3 wins – 14 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 443 Points
9) Frank Deiny, Jr. – 16 races – 0 wins – 10 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 426 points
10) Daniel Pope, III – 16 races – 3 wins – 13 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 409 points *

**Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20. Second place receives two fewer points, and so-on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five bonus points. For example, if there are 20 cars, the winner receives 45 points, second gets 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner received 35 points, second gets 28 and third 26. The top 18 races count towards the National Championship for a driver. A perfect season for a driver would be 18 race wins with 20 car fields which equates to 810 points. The first driver to reach 810 points is declared the National Champion in the event of a tie.**
