NASCAR Race Weekend Central

Keepin’ it Short – The TD Bank 250 has been bringing out the best since 1974

Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine has been putting on their big race every year since 1974. It has been billed as the richest short track race in America and will pay this year’s victor a cool $25,000 for first place. It also pays $100 for every lap that a driver leads. In theory a driver could take $50,000 home with them if they led every lap. The race attracts the best drivers in the country and routinely pulls in drivers from NASCAR’s top series since they generally run the race on an off weekend during the Summer.

*Thanks to Oxford Plains web site there are more facts about the race than you can shake a stick at. Here are some of the highlights:*

Three drivers have won the race three times: Dave Dion, Ralph Nason and Mike Rowe. The impressive fact about Nason’s trifecta was that he won the three races in consecutive years, from 1998 through 2000. Geoff Bodine, Chuck Bown, Jamie Aube, Ben Rowe and Eddie MacDonald have all won the race twice. If MacDonald can pull off the win this season he’ll match Nason as he’s won the last two years in a row.

Butch Lindley and Robbie Crouch are tied for the record of runner-up finishes with three apiece. Lindley also holds the record for the most top-3 finishes with no less than six finishes on the podium. Larry Gelina is the only driver who finished first the year after finishing last. Scott Robbins finished second in 2001 and followed it up with a win, the only driver who has accomplished that feat. Mike Rowe has a few different distinctions. Among them he has qualified for the most 250s with 30 of them. He’s also won the last chance race and the big race in the same season which no other driver has ever done.

Tom Rosati was 19 when he won the race in 1979, the youngest driver to take home the trophy. At the opposite end of the spectrum Nason was 60 when he stood in Victory Lane in 2000, the oldest of any competitor to ever do that. Karen Schulz is the only woman who has ever started the race, finishing 42nd in 1989. Junior Hanley has sat on the pole three times for the 250, more than anyone else. Unfortunately for Hanley he’s never taken the checkered flag from the pole unlike five other drivers–Dion, Bodine, Gelinas, Gary Drew and Ben Rowe. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Keith Cavanaugh and Jeff Stevens are tied for the most last-place finishes at two each.

In 2005, Mike Rowe won the race from the 37th starting position, the furthest back an eventual champion has ever started. The most positions ever gained was by Matt Kenseth in 2004 when he came from 41st to third. The race has been delayed by rain four times. It started late in 1991, was pushed back a day in 1986 and 2008 while in 1979 it was delayed an entire week. The record for the most caution flags in a race was 1997 when the yellow flew 21 times.

The only father and son champions in the history of the race are Mike and Ben Rowe who have combined for five wins. The Bodine brothers, Brett, Geoff and Todd are the only set of three brothers to take the green flag in the event. There have been 11 sets of brothers who have competed in the race including Rusty and Kenny Wallace, Terry and Bobby Labonte, Ken and Ron Bouchard, Jeff and Ward Burton and Kurt and Kyle Busch. The most successful brothers qualifying for the race are Beaver and Bobby Dragon–they have competed in the same race ten times. There have also been two grandfather / grandson combinations who have competed in the race over the years–Stub Fadden and Mike Olsen along with Dave and Josh St. Clair.

The list of NASCAR drivers who have run in the 250 is long and impressive. There have been nine former Cup champions who have run the 250 – Bobby Allison, Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Terry Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Darrell Waltrip and Matt Kenseth. There are 12 former Nationwide series champions who have run in the 250 including Jack Ingram, Rob Moroso, Steve Grissom, Joe Nemechek, Randy LaJoie and David Green. 11 Daytona 500 winners have taken the green flag in the 250 including Tiny Lund, Kevin Harvick, Ernie Irvan and Davey Allison.

Whelen All-American National Championship Update

Keith Rocco is putting on a surge in an attempt to distance himself from the competition. Taking advantage of being able to run three days a week against large fields, Rocco scored two more victories this past week, both against maximum point fields. Riding that wave of success he knocked Lee Pulliam out of the top spot in the standings by increasing his season total to 700 points. Pulliam was able to notch a victory in his only race of the week and, fortunately for him, he replaced a DNF with a win which bumped his point total to 694, just six behind Rocco.

Phillip Morris hung onto the third position in the points with his customary win at South Boston also replacing a DNF with a max point win. Morris added 43 points to his season total giving him 644 points for the year. Fortunately for Pulliam and Morris both Motor Mile and South Boston are running twin races this coming weekend so they very well might be able to add more points to their totals than Rocco can running three times in the Northeast.

C.E. Falk scored a fourth-place finish at South Boston which was worth 34 points but he was able to include all of those in his point total because he’s only run 17 races. That moved him within 47 points of third place and just over 100 out of the top spot. It will be a long shot for Falk to pull off the championship but stranger things have happened. Nate Monteith rounds out the top 5 again this week after a victory added 33 points to his total for the year bringing it to 522. The rest of the top 10 in points has the same members as last week, although Bill Leighton, Jr. jumped over Ryan Preece for the sixth spot.

1) Keith Rocco – 30 races – 16 wins – 22 top 5s – 27 top 10s – 700 points
2) Lee Pulliam – 20 races – 12 wins – 17 top 5s – 18 top 10s – 694 points
3) Philip Morris – 19 races – 12 wins – 15 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 644 points
4) C.E. Falk, III – 17 races – 5 wins – 14 top 5s – 16 top 10s – 597 points
5) Nate Monteith – 20 races – 8 wins – 17 top 5s – 17 top 10s – 522 points
6) Bill Leighton, Jr. – 14 races – 3 wins – 14 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 485 points
7) Ryan Preece – 20 races – 3 wins – 14 top 5s – 17 top 10s – 481 points
8) Lee Tissot – 18 races – 3 wins – 15 top 5s – 17 top 10s – 477 Points
9) Frank Deiny, Jr. – 17 races – 0 wins – 11 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 464 points
10) Daniel Pope, III – 18 races – 3 wins – 15 top 5s – 17 top 10s – 463 points

**Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20. Second place receives two fewer points, and so-on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five bonus points. For example, if there are 20 cars, the winner receives 45 points, second gets 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner received 35 points, second gets 28 and third 26. The top 18 races count towards the National Championship for a driver. A perfect season for a driver would be 18 race wins with 20 car fields which equates to 810 points. The first driver to reach 810 points is declared the National Champion in the event of a tie.**
