Keepin’ it Short – Crowning the Short Track Kings in Rockford

For 46 years, short track racers in the Midwest and beyond have made a pilgrimage to Rockford Speedway to settle the debate over who is the best. Dick Trickle took home the crown in that first battle back in 1966 and since then the quarter-mile track has been the site of the Short Track National Championship every year. The three days of racing this season will include 15 different feature races with cars ranging from Hornets to Super Late Models. The weekend will culminate with the ASA Midwest Super Late Model Tour running the 200 lap feature event on Sunday afternoon.

Action will begin Friday night with Nason’s Landscaping “Faster Than a Speeding Bullet” qualifying at 5:30. Feature racing is scheduled to start at 7:07 with races in the Weekly Warrior Late Models, All-American Sportsman, American Short Tracker, RoadRunners, Hornet Bandit Challenge and Figure-8s.

Saturday’s qualifying begins at 2:15 and features roll off beginning at 5:05. The feature race for Saturday night is the Big 8 Series running a 108 lap feature. It will also include qualifying races for the ASA Midwest Tour, Illini Midgets, Illinois Vintage Racing and the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour. The Sportsman race will crown the champion for the series for the season. After Friday and Saturday race programs, the spectators are invited to enjoy the world famous After Race Parties put on in the Budweiser Pavillion.

But the weekend doesn’t end with the Saturday night parties. Sunday action begins with Mid-American Stock Car Series qualifying at 11:15 with main events starting at 12:30. The Gerber Challenge, Mid-American Stock Car Series and ASA Midwest Tour National Short Track Championship 200 are the highlight races for Sunday. Previous winners of the NSTC include Trickle, Mark Martin, Butch Miller, Joe Shear, Mark Martin and Steve Carlson, who has won the race seven times and will be in the field this weekend. Ross Kenseth, Nathan Haseleu, Jacob Goede and Andrew Morrissey are among the current ASA Midwest stars who will be racing in the feature this weekend.

Rockford Speedway is a hotbed of racing activity in the Midwest and many of the superstars of racing have run on the quarter-mile track en route to the upper echelons of racing. This weekend could well be the another step for a racing star of the future. If you’re anywhere near Northern Illinois this weekend, a trip to Rockford would be time well spent to take in part of the National Short Track Championship.

*ASA National Champion Crowned*

Whoever says racing is a young man’s game has never seen Barry Beggarly run a Late Model Stock car. Beggarly is 62 years old and was just announced Thursday evening as the 2011 ASA National Member Track Champion. This is Beggarly’s second national championship, having taken the 1993 NASCAR National Championship in a tie-breaker over Dennis Setzer.

Beggarly ran 16 races at Ace Speedway this season, scoring five wins, four seconds, two third-place finishes, four fourths and a lone fifth-place finish. His average finish of 2.5 was the best among the over 400 drivers who competed for the title. Beggarly’s ending average finish in the national points was 4.9416. The number is calculated using a proprietary formula that takes into account wins, finishing position, starting position, car count and number of events.

Beggarly barely beat out Jason York for the track championship at Ace Speedway this year which was critical to his title hopes. It is a requirement, in the ASA National Championship, to win the track championship in order to be considered for the national title. Beggarly entered the last race of the season leading York by two points. When the checkered flag fell Beggarly was second to Jeb Burton but, more importantly, two spots ahead of York, giving him the Ace track championship.

This was Beggarly’s fourth track title at Ace, having previously been crowned the king of the track in 1990, 1993, and 1996. He has also been a track champion at Orange County Speedway and South Boston speedway. Beggarly was named to the list of 25 greatest drivers in NASCAR Weekly Series racing during the 25th anniversary of the series in 2006.

Zack Franks finished second to Beggarly while Chrissy Wallace came home third and was the highest finishing driver from the West Region, which earned her the title of West Region Champion. Wallace ran 19 races at Lebanon I-44 Speedway, scoring 6 wins, 12 top fives and 16 top tens. Her average finish was 4.4737.
