Landon Cassill Driver Diary: Getting a New Team Going and Easter Break

It’s been a good season. I really enjoy my team, I love this group of guys I work with. It’s a great group of people and I think BK Racing has a lot of potential. I’m looking forward to what it can bring. Our results haven’t been the best so far, but we’ve been building a team from the ground up so it’s definitely not easy and I think we’re improving on our cars right now. We’re just trying to make everything better one week at a time.

I can’t pinpoint any one thing we need to work on because there are so many moving parts to building a race team and there is so much going on that if we can just execute our job, whatever that job may be whether it’s me as the driver, the crew chief, the truck driver, the tire guy, the gas man, everybody that has a job, as long as we can execute that job properly and do what you need to do, I think that’s where we’re going to improve as a whole. It’s not one thing.

Landon Cassill got a 25th hour deal for a full-time Cup ride this season, and is currently in the midst of the struggle for a top 35 slot.

Right now, Burger King is kind of our primary sponsor on my car, the [No.] 83, and it’s through the franchisees, the owners who are of part of the team, and really the goal there is to generate some corporate interest from Burger King and even the vendor interest from any vendors that work with Burger King. You get the word out to them that there’s an opportunity for them to compete in the Sprint Cup Series. That’s sort of how Dr. Pepper came on board and Dr. Pepper has been really excited about this racing program. They’re going to be the primary sponsor on Travis’s car at Texas this weekend. So we are a funded team, but we’re sort of self-funded right now more than anything, so we’re looking at any sponsorship opportunities that are available.

In regards to the Martinsville issue where David Reutimann stopped on the track, I’d like to see NASCAR reconfigure the top 35 rule. As of right now, I think it’s served its purpose as to what the sport needed at the time for when they put it in place. Right now, though, it probably needs re-done because of teams that are buying points and things like that. I don’t necessarily have a solution to it off the bat, but I definitely do think it could be improved on.

I’d like to see a combination of certain drivers being locked in, but still having the fastest 43 in the race. I’d like to see the fastest 43 get locked in but somehow protect the obvious from happening which would be Dale Earnhardt Jr. missing the race or Jeff Gordon or something. Those guys are very valuable to our sport and I think they want to protect that, but who knows? I guess Tiger Woods could miss the cut to the Master’s so there’s no telling!

Over the off weekend, I just enjoyed my time off around the house and tried not to do a whole lot really. I just hung out and spent some time with friends and enjoyed the holiday. I definitely did some major spring cleaning. I cleaned my house thoroughly.

My girlfriend’s family actually came down to Charlotte for Easter , so we spent the weekend with them here at home and went to church, had a huge brunch, and just kind of relaxed on Sunday while watching the Master’s. I enjoy it because it’s time off. It’s always time off from something whether it’s school or work or whatever. You get that time off and you enjoy it. I always enjoy that time of year, just watching some golf and hanging out.

Looking ahead to Texas, I love racing there. I think it’s a great track, and I think it will be good for us. We went to the seven-post this week and learned some things. I feel like I’m strong at the mile-and-a-halfs so I’m looking forward to it. I like the night races. I think they’re exciting.
