Sprint Cup Practices – Richmond

Mark Martin paced the first Sprint Cup practice of the day, and secured the final qualifying run for this evening, with a lap of 21.309 seconds and a speed of 126.707 mph. Martin was ahead of his former Roush Fenway teammate, Greg Biffle, who ran a 21.397 second lap for a speed of 126.186 mph. Third fastest in practice was Paul Menard, who turned in a 21.405 second lap that is good for a speed of 126.139 mph. Unfortunately for Menard, he bounced his car off of the wall shortly after posting the lap and will have to go to a backup car for the evening, although his qualifying position will stand. Turning in the fourth quickest time of the session was Clint Bowyer, one thousandth of a second slower than Menard, at 21.406 for a speed of 126.133. Rounding out the top five was Joey Logano with a 21.429 second lap at a speed of 125.997.

The second practice session for the Cup cars was led by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who laid down a lap of 21.800 seconds for a speed of 123.853 mph. Second to Earnhardt was Carl Edwards who knocked off a lap of 21.826 seconds for a speed of 123.706 mph. Landon Cassill notched a solid 21.914 second lap which translates to a 123.209 mph lap for the third fastest time in the session. Jeff Gordon ran 11 laps in the session and laid down a 21.931 second lap on his very last circuit for a speed of 123.113 mph and the fourth fastest time of the session. Rounding out the top five speeds of the second practice was Kyle Busch, who turned in a 21.990 second lap at 122.783 mph.
