Keepin’ it Short – The season of big races continues

The season of big races continues to roll on this weekend as the 41st Annual Winchester 400 takes place at Winchester Speedway in Eastern Indiana. The world’s fastest half-mile (and they have the video on the web site to prove it) will again play host to some of the best Super Late Model drivers in the country as the CRA Super Series sanctions the event. In addition to the normal contenders on the CRA Super tour, there will be some big name drivers rolling in to try and etch their names in the history books as winners of this prestigious event.

This event has been held every year–except 2004 and 2005–since 1970. Bob Senneker is the unquestioned king of the event, having notched seven victories in the 37 previous runnings of the race, including five straight from 1974 through 1978. Several well-known stock car drivers have engraved their names on the Winchester 400 trophy over the years. The list includes Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Ted Musgrave, David Stremme and Kyle Busch. Future star Chase Elliott score the prestigious win in 2010 while Boris Jurkovic was the first one to the checkered flag in 2011.

The 2012 event promises to be another barn burner of a race with the likes of Busch, Elliott, Jurkovic, recent Winchester winner Johnny Van Doorn, Legends Million winner Daniel Hemric and All-American 400 winner Ross Kenseth all entered. 44 cars had submitted entries as of Monday October 8th. The winner of this year’s event is guaranteed $15,000 for the win and it could reach as high as $26,500 with lap leader money and bonuses. The winner of the race also receives a Winchester rifle which is probably the most prized part of scoring the win.

Winchester Speedway is located in Eastern Indiana, just north of Richmond. It is a half-mile, asphalt track with 36 degrees of banking in the turns, 12 degrees on the back straight and 9 degrees on the front straight. The tremendously steep banking and raciness of the surface is part of the attraction of the historic venue. The track was constructed in 1914 and has been continuously running since then. It was the first half-mile facility built in this country specifically for auto racing. The facility has increased its seating capacity over the years and now seats 5,000 people. It has hosted races for most every major sanctioning body in the United States at some point. Camping is a popular pastime among race fans, especially for the 400 weekend. It is on a first come first served basis and costs a mere $20.

The racing schedule for 2012 has included CRA, ARCA, JEG’s and Xtreme events. With NASCAR talking about going back to the short tracks with the Truck series Winchester is certainly hopeful that they might be able to entice the biggest sanctioning body in the country to come to Eastern Indiana.

If you’re anywhere near the Midwest this weekend you’d be well served to make the trip east of Indianapolis to take in the sights and sounds of Winchester Speedway. There aren’t too many tracks left that can boast of having had a Cup race and a Midget race both contested on their surface but Winchester is among them.
