Keepin’ it Short – The War Between the States Rages on

It has been nearly 150 years since the American Civil War came to an end. While most people have come to accept that outcome, there are still those that hang onto the animosity on some level, and the North-South Shootout brings that to the surface every racing season. This weekend, at Caraway Speedway, some of the best drivers in the North and the South will take to the track to settle the score once again in seven different divisions. Lite Modifieds, SK Modifieds, Tour Modifieds, Sportsman, Legends, Super Trucks and Super Late Models will all do battle on the 0.455-mile oval in feature races on Saturday night in the Colors Edge John Blewett III North-South Shootout presented by PPG.

The North-South Shootout was held at Concord Speedway for the first eight years of its existence, but last year it moved to Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC. There have been many incarnations of the North-South, but they have always been centered around the Tour Modifieds. The first year it was run, John Blewett, III took the win. He backed that up in 2005 with a second victory. Two years later he was killed in an accident at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut. The race has carried his name since 2007 and honors his legacy as a racer’s racer who did it all from sweeping the floors to setting up the race car.

Between the years that Blewett won the North-South, Donny Lia came to Concord and took the trophy. In the first John Blewett, III memorial race, it was Matt Hirschman who scored the win, and in 2008 he became the first back-to-back winner. He went back-to-back again in 2010 and 2011 to establish himself as the only four-time winner of the race. Between Hirschman’s two back-to-back wins, Burt Myers grabbed the big fake check in the racing Civil War.

This season’s race marks the first time the PASS Super Late Models will be on the docket for the event. The Modified feature will be 125 laps while the PASS Super Late Models will make 150 circuits around the track. The first race of the night will be the SK Modifieds running 50 laps. Legends cars will follow the Sks for 25 laps of heated racing. The feature race of the night, the Tour Type Modifieds will be up next with their 125 laps of battling. Super Late Model Trucks will run 75 laps next before the Super Late Models take to the track for their feature. The lite modifeds will make 40 laps in anger before the Sportsmen finish up the night with 40 laps of their own.

Seven feature races for one ticket price will be hard to beat. Two feature races of over 100 laps is a rare deal indeed. If you’re in the Carolinas this weekend, make the trip to Asheboro to check out a good old fashioned Civil War contested on a half-mile race track.
