Holding a Pretty Wheel: The Wheel Files – Conspiracy Theories Alive & Well in NASCAR

Did you hear? NASCAR wants Kyle Busch to win the championship and will do anything to make sure he does. NASCAR doesn’t want Hendrick Motorsports to win another title, either. And the reason they don’t publish the rulebook or specific punishments is so they can punish based on who they want to win and who …

Thompson in Turn 5: Jeremy Mayfield Hearing Delayed, & The Whole Mess Could Have Been Avoided

It has been almost a month since the suspension of Sprint Cup owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield and the matter is no closer to resolution. Wednesday’s scheduled hearing before a North Carolina Superior Court Judge in Mecklenburg County, N.C. was cancelled due to an 11th-hour move on the part of NASCAR to have the case heard in …

Did You Notice? NASCAR’s Vague Meeting, Eury’s Imminent Departure & The Poor Become Penniless

Both NASCAR and Jeremy Mayfield refuse to fully disclose the substance he failed his test for? I brought this up in DYN a couple of weeks ago, and felt I did some shoddy reporting on the issue of whether or not the sport would be in hot water if they ever revealed Mayfield’s test results. Well, it turns out after doing some digging the key element here is that Mayfield is not a contracted employee of NASCAR. As such, I’ve confirmed he doesn’t fall under the context of the current HIPAA rules. Those laws, brought up by some dedicated fans of the column, would have made it a federal violation of privacy for the sport to release his test results.

5 Points to Ponder: Memorial Day Weekend 2009 Edition

iRacing has joined the ranks of NASCAR-sanctioned series… what? If you missed the memo, it came out this week that the racing simulator which pits fans against technologically savvy drivers like Dale Earnhardt Jr. will begin in 2010. Now, the NASCAR purist in me is wondering why the sanctioning body is even bothering getting involved with this project, but the “Playstation generation” and former Papyrus: NASCAR Racing 2003 online competitor in me thinks this is absolutely awesome. Since Papyrus disbanded years ago, NASCAR simulator fans everywhere have had no real unified place to race in cyberspace.

Tony Stewart took Lowe’s Motor Speedway by storm Saturday night, as the driver of the No. 14 Office Depot/Old Spice Chevy smelled victory and found it in the 25th annual All-Star Race. Stewart’s first win as a driver/owner and first All-Star win came in a race that saw tepid-at-best racing in the first three segments …

5 Points to Ponder: NASCAR Notes From The Week

A solid run for Circle Bar Racing on paper in Friday’s 200-mile race at Lowe’s didn’t necessarily translate to harmony across the team after the race. Battling for the 11th position coming off turn 4 on the final lap, rookie James Buescher got into the door of teammate Rick Crawford and continued to shove him down the track, eventually knocking him into the grass at the stripe. Crawford was not happy with the phenom, offering a few choice words for the driver of the No. 10 who also participates in a monthly driver diary for Frontstretch.

Matt McLaughlin Mouths Off: Jeremy Mayfield Innocent Until Proven Guilty

News broke shortly before last weekend’s Darlington race that owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield had tested positive for a banned substance after a random test conducted under NASCAR’s new drug program. Mayfield was the first driver to run afoul of that new testing program and, obviously, the news raised some eyebrows. Let me go on record as …
